We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks come with the territory of being an Entrepreneur. I feel that if I don’t take risks in my career then I’m not being true to my business/brand and more importantly, myself. I believe its healthy to take risks and to be open to understanding that the choices or risks that you take may not bring the outcome you intended. In the long run the risks that don’t work out, in my opinion, end up being invaluable lessons. I took the biggest risk at the beginning of my career, as a Makeup Artist, when I quit my day job in a law firm to try something that I knew very little about but I felt extremely drawn to which was beauty and cosmetics. It has been the best risk I have ever taken. The second was becoming a Licensed Esthetician which was a very risky choice I made almost 10 years into my career and business as a Makeup Artist. These two risks alone have changed my life forever. I have also taken some risks in my life and career that didn’t work out the way I had hoped but those moments taught me to be more flexible and that risks are just a constant in life.

What should our readers know about your business?
My name is Kate Chavez, I am a Licensed Esthetician and Freelance Makeup & Hair Artist . My business is Kate Chavez Beauty and Skin and I provide Mobile Beauty & Skincare Services. Which means that I go to my clients home to do makeup artistry or give facial treatments. One thing that I have learned in my career is that being in your safe space while getting pampered is probably the most luxurious thing you can allow yourself to experience. Everyday for me is truly a dream come true because I am so passionate about what I do and my business. My clients are treated like my bestfriends. I really like to go above and beyond for my clients. When you book a service with me, I really take pride in knowing that you will feel better and look your best. Kate Chavez Beauty and Skin has been in the making for over 10 years. Having your own business takes time and something that you learn as a business owner is that your business evolves and changes constantly. This is one of the main reasons why my business is mobile. Being able to see my clients in the evening after their child is put to bed or perhaps getting a facial treatment before you have to leave for the airport. It’s all about my clients and how I can make their schedule work for them to still get their glam session or facial. That’s what has set me apart from the traditional beauty studios.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m born and raised in LA so I have a pretty good map of what to do for fun. In a week there is so much that you can do. Day 1 let’s go to the beach. Venice Beach is known for their boardwalk and fun places to eat and drink. Cabo Cantina is a staple on Washington Blvd or Italian food at C&O Cucina. There is also Santa Monica Beach near by with the Santa Monica Pier and the attractions there, Bubba Gump and the arcade.
Day 2 and 3 would be Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory. Hollywood walk of fame. There is Mel’s Diner, the Kodak theater and of course Amoeba Music store. In Echo park there is Masa Cafe which has the best deep dish pizza and bread pudding dessert.
Day 4 you have to visit the MOCA museums and The Music Center in Downtown. I would take my bestie to dinner at Bavel in the arts district.
The other days you can go to the mountains in Big Bear or even hike Temescal canyon if you want to be near the coast.
On the Last day
I would go to the park near LACMA and have a picnic enjoy some Japanese Curry from Curryfornia.
There is still so much to do but that’s just some of the top picks for me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to Shoutout my mom for being my #1 inspiration. It’s because of my Mother that I discovered my love of beauty and art. As a Makeup Artist, the community support is always amazing and so humbling especially from my friend and mentor Patrick Santa Ana. I’ve known Patrick for a few years and I am so grateful for him. Patrick has really opened my eyes and shown me more about business as a creative. Patrick has always been encouraging me to follow my dreams and to reach my career goals as a small Latina business owner and Makeup Artist.
I also need to Shoutout my fellow Latina business woman Jennifer Rosas, owner of LA Cuties Nails, for encouraging me to get my Esthetic License. Jennifer really gave me my start as a Licensed Esthetician. All my early facial treatments were done at her studio in Los Angeles, CA.
