We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Crellin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the art I make is collaboration. Group singing, by its very nature, embodies collaboration because it cannot happen alone; it requires individuals coming together, each contributing their strengths to create something together.
So much of my personal and artistic growth has come from learning from and collaborating with others. By surrounding myself with inspiring and talented individuals, I’ve been able to blend different perspectives, skills, and ideas to achieve more than I could alone.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Group singing has always been my favorite art form- my creative and social outlet. More recently, I’ve developed a passion and deep interest in choral composition.
I was never trained formally as a composer, and I come at my art as a singer and educator, which I believe sets me apart. I also started writing using completely free software/resources- Musescore, Garageband, and public domain poetry.
I always encourage other musicians to give composition a try, even if they haven’t had any formal training or experience, or can’t afford to buy the latest DAW or notation software.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve spent almost my whole life in LA, yet I’m always discovering new fantastic spots. I love outdoor concerts during the summer, and there are tons going on all the time! A few I’ve loved- Manhattan Beach’s Polliwog Park Concerts, LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl, or farmer’s market performances.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout A Cappella Academy! Attending A Cappella Academy as a high school student fundamentally changed my trajectory as a musician. It’s a non-profit organization and has impacted the lives of so many musicians from around the world. I love being a part of the camp staff, where I’m able to contribute to the community that has given me so much!
