We had the good fortune of connecting with Makenzie Mizell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makenzie, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
Period Network is an organization fueled by the desire to see women and non-binary folks find their voices embody true confidence. We strive to accomplish this by giving a platform to marginalized individuals, not only in terms of gender. We also make use of the fact that we have a broad audience to bring attention to important issues and raise up members of the community, from educating our listeners about important topics to airing free ads during Covid for small and/or minority owned businesses, and other community outreach operations.
What should our readers know about your business?
Wow! A lot has changed since my previous interview. In case you missed it, I’m the organizer and audio engineer for a company called Period Network, a podcast network for femme and non-binary folks. We’ve got a full roster of shows on the air and more to be released, soon. Our goal was to lift up voices of shes and theys, folks whose voices are often talked over, and we’re really doing it! I’ve learned a lot along the way. I’ve learned to listen and to lead. I’ve learned to be organized. I’ve learned that mistakes happen and it’s not the end of the world. Mostly, I’ve come to understand in a profound way what I’ve known all along: “Girl Power.”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh! I absolutely love this question! Ok, let’s take on the challenge of having a good time around town during lockdown. There’s still so much to do! I think I’d like to show a visitor what varied experiences they can have in one city. I’d take them hiking out in Pasadena so they could see how easy it is to get out into nature from the city. I’d love to take them up to Matador beach where it’s not so crowded and you can stick your fingers in some sea anemones. We could have a fun little touristy time on the walk of fame, catch of a glimpse of the Hollywood sign, then pick up some food from Hollywood (I’m partial to Tocaya Organica) and go have a picnic at a secret spot at Griffith Park. Lastly, I’d like to take them to a farmer’s market. I used to live in Echo Park so I’m partial to that one, but any of them would be fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes! This shoutout is dedicated to all the women of Period Network: August McLaughlin, Kristen Parraz, Sara Bazan, Jen Lopez, AM Davies, Judith Kargbo, Coradata McCloud, and Alli Slice! They are the network and we can only make this work when we work together.
