We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Paguinto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for Presko when I was trying to figure out how to grow my jewelry business. At the time, I was selling online and occasionally sold at markets. I loved interacting with my customers in person but I found markets to be incredibly draining. It requires a lot of heavy lifting and long hours of sitting in one place. Not to mention how easy it is to get lost in a sea of other vendors. I thought to myself, if I could do smaller pop ups, sell to a more targeted audience, and choose my own hours, I’d be set. I did a lot of research and couldn’t find a solution to my problem. So I decided to build it myself! Presko is a platform where online-based businesses can book space inside of local brick and mortar stores and sell their products in person during operating hours. Think of it like Airbnb for pop ups!
What should our readers know about your business?
Presko is a platform where online-based businesses can book space inside of local brick and mortar stores and sell their products in person. Think of it like Airbnb for pop-ups! I created this as a way to bridge the gap between online and in-person retail. Most small businesses can’t afford to lease their own brick and mortar stores so they are limited to selling online or participating in markets. I wanted to give small business owners an avenue to share their products with their community in a more personal way. My goal is to facilitate stronger relationships within the small business community through shared resources and human connection.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oooh! Some of my favorite coffee shops are Kumquat in Highland Park, Dayglow in Silverlake, and the Bourgeois Pig in Los Feliz. Some good food spots are Silverlake Ramen and Spoon & Pork (both in Silverlake) Depending on how touristy they’re feeling, I’d take them to the Getty Villa or Griffith Observatory Maybe find an outdoor movie to go to, wander around Los Feliz and pop into Skylight Books, maybe catch an improv show at UCB or a comedy show in Hollywood. I also feel like the beach is always a good idea for someone who’s visiting from out of town! Venice is obviously a vibe and Manhattan Beach is nice too
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a looooong list of people I can think of. First and foremost, I would give a shout out to my mentor, Ellen Huerta, founder of Mend. She really helped to guide me through the process of getting started and encouraged me when I doubted myself. I would also thank my right-hand lady, Leanna Merza, who worked alongside me and helped me turn my ideas into plans. And finally, I would give a shoutout to all the people who have joined the #preskommunity so far!
