We had the good fortune of connecting with Katelyn Buchan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katelyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was something that came slowly and naturally building through my early 20’s to really establishing a professional business late 20s. At first it was a fun hobby going to music festivals sharing my art and live painting in 2018. As I continued to work a 40 hour week job that was physically and mentally draining me and working the weekends at festivals I decided that I wanted to look at a different direction to go in my life. I found myself when working a 40 hour week job, understaffed, toxic environment, coping stress with alcohol and eating poorly. I felt stuck. After I went through a mentorship programs I realized that the power of our mind is the only thing that is holding back from creating our dreams to become reality. I found healthier coping mechanisms, my mindset changes and i started to focus on what i really wanted to create in my life which was to travel and share my art with others. In 2021 I became a full time visual artist performing at shows and festivals live painting and sharing my art. My performing artist name is FlowKateOfMind.
I went from a “starving artist” mindset, to a thriving artist mindset. I went from being a victim of my circumstances at work, to being in control taking that leap from a “safe” job to creating my own reality as an entrepreneur.
My thought process for starting my own business was that I wanted to be able to travel the United states sharing my passion for the creative arts. To have the inner Freedom, creating my own American Dream. To inspire other artists that it is possible and the only limitation is ourselves holding back.
I started hosting creative art workshops as well to share to others how to tap into the FLow-State-Of-Mind, on How the creative arts can create unity and social change. My process of art is inspired by connecting within and using meditation to guide me to share symbolisms and messages. No matter where you are from, how your upbringing is, we all can gather together and connect to similar subject matter and relate and connect in diverse ways together.
After 5 years of going to music festivals, art shows and markets, I realized that I wanted to reach beyond the limit of selling paintings you hang on the walls. With new technology and options that are provided I ended up learning photoshop, procreate to learn to design clothing. In 2022 is when Liquid Visions Wearable Art was made creating original textile patterns that were created from my original art paintings.
I not only am creating clothing but other merch as well, cloaks, bucket hats, fans, towels, blankets, shorts, yoga mats, legging and more!
Now people who wear my art are a walking canvas!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

FlowKateOfMind artist name was inspired from my bachelors degree in art therapy. I was trained in ways to use meditation to tap into the flow-state-of-mind and allow whatever to come through to me. To trust the process. With the balance to fine arts and experimental flow arts this allowed me to release what was happening within me into a creation on canvas. Some of my art is blacklight activated and also can be used with three-D glasses. I paint a lot of animals, spiritual paintings and landscapes. What is unique and beautiful when I am witnessing people look at my art, is the reactions! I have had people come into my gallery space who end up crying because of the beautiful meaningful connection they have with the piece. Some people share it to bring them back to a safe familiar feeling that they had. Some people feel like they have seen it before in a dream, vision or an experience they had in life. The most beautiful part about this is that WE the PEOPLE can connect to this ART and RELATE together with the INNER KNOWING that we are all CONNECTED in some shape or form. Its magical.
I was in school for my counseling masters degree in 2020 then I had a mentorship program that changed my entire direction of life. I realized where I had resistance and reflected one what I truly wanted. I wanted to explore, paint & share. In 2021 then I left my masters degree program, bought a van and traveled to many states and cities diving into being a full time artist. The Alignment started, I sold a 6ft oil painting, and had enough to get the van. I looked for a van for a year as I found out that Van Coivd happened. To be honest, it was divine timing. It was as if I was slowly setting my business up in my early twenties to be able to take a full leap out of conventional society. At first i was scared, and I realized it was all in my head. I found some challenges holding boundaries on the FEAR and WORRY people would say in my ears the WHAT IF’s, the not STABLE, and Starving artist type of talk. I stood my ground, hearing anything that is not fully towards my passion for my business I will not tolerate that energy.
Three Years later my business is running full time on my own and now created a clothing line called Liquid Visions Wearable Art. It is all up to our story we put in our head. If we are scared to put ourselves out there we will be scared. It is stepping ito the UNKNOWN, which can be scary. It also is LIBERATING! It guided me to grow so much as a person, business woman and an artist. So with all of that being said, I created the slogan “Change your Story, Shift your Mind”. I also have had some lessons when it comes to work life balance with relationships when it comes to working for yourself. At this point working for yourself, you can work for hours and hours even more than 40 hours a week. I realised this is not sustainable and it is also okay to ask for help. Being a traveling artist taught me to be very innovative, tapping into my intuition more and also being able to fix and make what i need. I am proud of how my company has grown and to continue to grow. I am thankful for these opportunities that have came and looking forward to me. I love working with the community with art, to share and help with events. I have directed art festivals, galleries, art camps, retreats and more.
