We had the good fortune of connecting with Katharina Geringas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katharina, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being surrounded by so many families that all have their own connection to Germany and the german language, I am always aiming for the best possible solution for the individual in front of me. Bringing german books to them to learn and upkeep the language that are the best possible choice for their personal needs always is the main goal in my consultations and the selection I offer. It is not just a sales gig it is a cultural exchange and enrichment of our cultures.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a studied musical performer. Singing, dancing and acting in Germany and german speaking countries is what I always loved most. Stage life in all its facets 🙂 After a performance for kids and teenagers, I was blown away how fascinated and inspired they were.
I didn’t know exactly then where it will all lead me, but my love for sharing the culture and values especially with young people, through what I can give, was born.
Today I believe sharing that passion and listening closely to the need of the person in front of me enables me to always find the best fit for my customers. And being on school BookFairs is one of the most fun parts of my day. I admire the dedication of all these that pick up
A second or even third language even though it is easier to just go the ‘normal’ school track. The challenges of a second language in an immersion program can be really hard and are certainly different for every single one! Helping them find the joy in stories that happen to be written in German makes me smile.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing we would do is grab a coffee at Little Grounds on Flower St in Glendale then head to Lake Hollywood and enjoy a 3 mile nature filled walk around the Lake (cause no one ever expects beautiful nature in LA) Standing on the Bridge looking back over the Lake towards the Hills with the Hollywood sign is one of my Favorite views! We would have Cuban lunch at MAMBO’S on victory (Glendale) the food is not only delicious, but the family run business with everyone still being involved every day in the restaurant is just the best way of feeling at home in LA! My favorite people to meet are Sheryl Guerrero, real estate agent with the best knowledge about places to go see, Mary Seward script supervisor, to peek into the world of Hollywood, Dick and Ursula Heimbold well traveled space shuttle engineer, author and artist, wonderful Gretchen Hydo for all things life coach and Nicole Lobart and Wiliam Budge concept artists on major films and shows. Other places I would definitely show are Canter’s, Pazzo Gelato, Zuma Beach, Erewhon Silver Lake, Angels Flight and the Last Bookstore.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to all emotional and business support from Sheryl Guerrero and Mary Seward. Both are American natives, sending their kids to the same german immersion school that my kids went to and created the most wonderful ‘launching my german book business’ event with me in 2011. I have never felt so much love and encouragement of my dreams. Which was an even bigger deal for me, because I just (3 months before in July 2011) moved my entire family to the States from Germany. After overcoming all hurdles (we were named ‘The Rogue Mamas’ In the best possible way, and we still call ourselves that 😊) we had the most fantastic German Book Fest in the german immersion school with not only my german books but all things german including story time,Bratwurst, crafting, singing and dancing! A magical day! All thanks to the three of us.
