We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathryn Ross-Nash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathryn, what do you attribute your success to?
Truth, clarity and being identifiable – I have built my brand organically. The first thing was to truly hone my craft as a pilates teacher. This means to train clients , the same clients, year after year and learn to truly apply the method and change their bodies. The other part of truth is to walk the walk. If you truly believe in what you are doing others feel that truth. We may be wonderful marketers, that gets people through the doors, but truth will keep them there. People are smart and they read the messages we are sending with our face and our body language. Our words may lie and manipulate, but our bodies don’t. The Second is to be clear. It is easy to lose focus and become distracted by shiny objects, too many catch phrases and marketing gimmicks . Be able to easily describe what you do in a few clear sentences. Be sure to include what you do, what makes you unique and the benefits your client will gain. The third is be identifiable. When I created the RedThread® Method of Pilates brand I wanted something to catch the eye, separate me from the other Pilates Brands and clearly identify that this was MY work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a former Principle Dancer of Ballet Hispanico of New York. Having danced with the company for ten years, I believe the focus, dedication and creativity truly set me up for where I am today. Also, as a dancer- well let’s say you are not doing it for the money…. Passion leads your work, you work hard and success will follow (Please note the work hard part!). I am most proud of the development of the Red Thread® Method of Pilates because it helps the students of today understand Pilates as a Method, not a list of exercises. During my dance career classes where build logically, not only to develop a young student to a professional, but each individual class had a focus. Each class built to a certain technique. I broke down the Pilates Method in this way, so other could digest and apply the method without having to spend the 40 plus years in the work, as I have. Trust me, it wasn’t easy. I was raising two small babies and had a house full of dogs while creating my business. I raise, breed and judge Australian Shepherds. To overcome this, I would not look at the entire picture of what needed to be done, but set small achievable goals for myself, each leading closer to my main objective. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is to keep your heart and eyes open! You may think your lives path is one thing- but the world may show you another. When I began Pilates in the 80’s I only thought of it as exercise to help my dance career and keep my body whole. I had no idea it would become my lives passion and work. I had no idea teaching it would fulfill my soul and helping people improve their quality of life and THEN to be able to train others to do so would be my destiny. I would love everyone to know that The Red Thread® Method of Pilates is work that can be understood and enjoyed by all Pilates teachers and the theory may be applied to all trainings. I would love to share with all Teachers this work, to make their jobs easier, more fulfilling and more successful. I would love to be part of making the quality of peoples lives better. Joe Pilates believed if everyone did his work they would find balance, inside and out. I believe the same.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
