We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Mack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson that the film industry has taught me is – if you don’t believe in yourself FIERCELY, no one else will.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Writers, directors and filmmakers come a dime a dozen – and that’s ok, that’s how it should be! What separates me from the rest is simple. My vision. How I see things, how I feel, how I emote – and how I’m able to weave all of these things together to create one fluid thing that is beautiful all around. From the visuals, to the aesthetic, to the storyline – the talent. I’ve prayed and asked over and over and over again: why is this the thing I’m passionate about? How come I’m not a teacher, a banker, a scientist! The one thing that I am sure about is that, the one thing I’m passionate about is storytelling. What excites me is the mere thought of having the ability to tell my stories the way I want to tell them – that I have the power to present something that is fully representative of my thoughts and dreams.
Trust me, it’s far from easy. And if anyone is ever thinking about doing this for money – that is the absolute worst reason to do it. Imagine there’s no money (because there very well may not be) and ask yourself – would you still want to do it? Would you still press forward? That has been a challenge for me, even still ’til this day. And it’s always the same answer – absolutely. I’ve learned that if you have an idea, a vision..it’s important to see it through because no one else is going to. It’s all on you to make it happen. Don’t we all owe ourselves that?
It’s hard. Finding the financial backing to make movies is hard. It tests me day in and day out. But honestly, it’s all I’ve got. If there’s one thing that I want the world to know about my brand and my work is: you can always count on me giving you a story that’s needed and it will always be a story to make you feel. There’s always going to be something that connects us all in all of my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
New York City is the place where you can do anything at any time of the day, any day of the week. I love food so if I had a friend coming into town, they better believe that it’s going to be food and drinks and good vibes all week. Breakfast at Perry’s Diner in the South Bronx, Brunch at Ricardo’s in Harlem, Dinner at Lido in Harlem, drinks at Gyu Kaku in Midtown. Pizza and wine is a category on it’s own so we’d definitely head to Babalucci’s in Harlem too! I’d take a little spin to the Meatpacking District to go to Little Island park on the water to take in some views of the city and of course rollerskating in Central Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out the circle of friends that I have that continue to uplift me, even on my worst days. Genesis Val León, Malissa Y. Myers, Jarred Solomon & my niece, Elle. They all play a part in me continuing to move forward in this career that has chose me.
