We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Mullen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

The most important factor behind my success has been the practice of investing in myself. Over time, this has meant many different things. I’ve invested in myself financially, educationally, through self-care (quality of sleep, massage, meditation, stretching, fueling myself with nutrients, giving myself space to play and create, allowing time to recharge and time to do nothing), and putting energy back into the clients and opportunities I already have.

I think sometimes as small businesses we get so tied up in the idea of growth and finding new opportunities that we lose track of the opportunities we already have. In moments when I’ve found myself feeling a sense of lack, playing the comparison game, or looking for the next big thing, I made the decision to, instead, put my focus back into the opportunities I already had. By focusing my energy inward and prioritizing presence, my classes got better, my clients felt better, and I gained more confidence and a greater sense of purpose. I believe the energy of care and presence in my work has not only been felt, but has created a magnetism that has led to new clients, bigger classes, and exciting opportunities. It takes patience, but this practice has allowed an organic growth in my business that has felt both stable and sustainable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I was initially drawn to fitness through dance, so I came to the workout space through a very specific lens. My workouts are highly dependent on music. Moving to the beat of the music not only makes workouts more fun, but also provides a space to connect to something sensory, outside of yourself, as a form of moving meditation. When you can allow the music to inform your movement, you can really drop into the zone.

I offer classes online—through my On-Demand platform—and also in-person. I teach my Outdoor Series classes Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in a private backyard in Brentwood, CA.

I’m also insanely excited to share that I’ve just joined the team at Open, teaching Hiit and Pilates! If you haven’t heard of Open yet, you’re missing out. They’re a mindfulness studio that offers breathwork, meditation, and movement—both online to a global community and in person at our Venice studio. Not only do I share Open’s values regarding mindfulness in movement—the importance of presence, breath, and music in workouts—but they are also such an inspiring and supportive community. This company just feels in complete alignment with where I am and where I want my own teaching practice to go. I am so excited for this new growth opportunity and am truly honored to be joining them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

My favorite thing about LA is that it feels like 10 cities in one. I’d set up a visit that shows off the contrast between each area. I prefer a soft itinerary, with each day exploring a different part of the city. This leaves a little more room for flexibility and spontaneity, which I really appreciate — Although, I always have a few dinner reservations and events on deck.

East LA: Coffee shop, flower district, flea market, park picnic with a view, dance party, downtown art show, tacos!

West LA: Farmer’s market, scenic drive through the canyons, Malibu beach day, bike ride, hike, bougie restaurant, drinks on the water, sushi!

West Hollywood – Workout class, neighborhood walk, rooftop drinks, speakeasy, green juice!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I have a handful of clients I truly could not have built this business without. Their support has been unmatched, and I appreciate them more than they know. Their consistency, rave reviews, and words of affirmation have given me the confidence and space to take my time with every new step. This has allowed for a sense of ease and organic growth I didn’t know was possible when starting your own business.

I’d also like to shoutout Arketa, the platform that made it possible for me to build my business. If you’re a fitness instructor or wellness professional looking for a way to host classes, develop community, and create a top tier on-demand library, Arketa is the platform for you. They are extremely personable, always there to give support, and constantly looking for new ways to help your business expand. It’s been so fun to grow alongside them. Thanks for everything you do, Arketa!
