We had the good fortune of connecting with Katt Balsan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katt, why did you pursue a creative career?
After graduating high school I went to Business school (in France) for 5 years and worked as an apprentice in different corporations in the sales and marketing department. At 23 years old I had been employed by 3 different companies and was graduating with a Master 2 degree in International Business Development. For the past 5 years I had had a taste of what the corporate world was like. At this point; life didn’t really make sense to me. I couldn’t imagine my self being an employee for the rest of my life waiting to retire. I was just miserable, there was no purpose or goal to reach. Question is: “How to be happy in this society”? What could I do that would make me as happy as often and as much as possible? I thought about all the things that truly made me happy. And that’s when I realized that I could follow my dream of acting, “playing pretend”. Ever since I was 4 years I was involved in some sort of theater or dance company. I loved playing pretend and being on stage. In 2012, while I was living in Paris at the time, I packed one bag, got a plane ticket and moved to Los Angeles. I’ve been following my dream ever since, it’s been the best roller coaster ride ever and I don’t regret a single bit of it. I can say that I am happy as much and as often as possible everyday. Living in the present moment is the answer that I was looking for. And that’s why I am pursing an artistic and creative lifestyle!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe in taking risks to get where you want. I moved to the other side of the world to pursue my dream of being an actor. Not knowing anyone in this new country, I took a chance and all the challenges that it came with, made me stronger and who I am today. Pursuing this career also brought me to new opportunities. I started running my own business with Airbnb rentals in Big Bear Lake California. Being in the “acting game” in LA, requires to be available on a short time notice. Actors schedule need to be flexible, so I did multiple little jobs like; uber, babysitting, cleaning, field staff… It was a struggle financially and mentally for the first 5 years. Ever since I opened my own business I am now free to pursue my acting career as well as being financially independent. My biggest accomplishment as far as my artistic career is my award winning One Woman Show “Balls’ON” directed by the late Gary Austin. All tough I don’t think this matters so much anymore. Today, I would say that my biggest accomplishment is being as happy as often and as much as possible and living in the present moment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends were to visit LA from France; I’d take them 2 hours east and up the mountain to Big Bear Lake! One of the most beautiful place of SoCal and only a 2 hour drive from Los Angeles. I’d take them hiking, sailing, skiing in the winter! We’d go camping in the National Forest of San Bernardino, we’d go rock climbing. I’d take them to the French Creperie that my friend Leslie opened in Big Bear! And I’d try to make them change their plane ticket from LAX to Ontario so we don’t have to sit in traffic anymore!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who supported me and showed me love during this journey. It starts with my mom, Natacha Houtcieff who’s always been there in the best and toughest moments. My brother, dad and grand-parents, my step-dad. My best friend Marie Cartier in Paris with who I started acting and doing webseries. Maddalena Ischiale who helped me shape my career in Los Angeles. The late Gary Austin; my mentor, friend and director of my One Woman Show “Balls’ON”, his daughter Audrey Austin Moore. My teacher the legendary Harry Mastrogeorge. Eddy Ruiz, Celine Nyanga, Monica Gozalbo, Aprille Nulan, Blandine and Michel le Pape, Michele Burke, Bianca Pieteesz, Tarniesha Stimage, all of my friends and fellow actors, all of the people who gave me a chance, all the directors, producers and casting directors that I’ve worked with, and all the ones to come! And to VOYAGE LA for reaching out to me and allowing me this opportunity 🙂
