We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Rexing and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never intended to have an online wellness business or become a “wellness influencer” (in fact, I almost cringe at that phrase). It all happened organically. I was a chef before having my four kids, and after years of being “home” as a mom, I wanted to have a creative outlet, so I started a small food blog.

At the time, meditation, yoga, and mindfulness were at the forefront of my life. As a mom with four young kids, these practices were what kept me grounded and calm. So naturally, I shared these small snippets of my life, and people were really curious. I would always get questions around meditation or my practices and how I managed feeling well and good with four little babies at home, so I shared what little I knew. I offered to lead a small morning meditation for free to anyone who was interested in joining, and over 60 women showed up. I knew there was something there. Women were hungry, not for my recipes, but for a sense of connection – to each other, but most of all, to themselves.

But I had no real “plan” to monetize anything or to grow a business per se. My intention was always really pure: to simply share what I know in hopes of helping another woman feel a little less alone. I had a big whiteboard in my office at the time and I wrote the word “HOPE” really big across it. It stood for “help one person every day”. And that was truly it. Just to show up each day with a servant’s heart to help. And I believe that’s what has made my work so impactful for so many women. It’s about THEM, not me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing I’m most proud of is the ripple effect I’m creating in the world right now. Whether we realize it or not, we are all creating momentum and ripple effects in our lives. Either positively or negatively. We are all connected.

As I think about sharing my work and my stories, I don’t think about just the women’s lives I touch—but more importantly, all the lives THEY touch: their children, their partners, their coworkers, the people in their communities. It is all connected. When they begin showing up in the world grounded, centered, whole, and at peace, they give permission to all the people around them to do the same.

There is so much suffering our world right now. You can see it everywhere, from your own home to around the globe. And while we can’t always change what’s happening on a global level – we can change what’s happening WITHIN US. We also need to understand how much power we have in creating positive change, even on the smallest level.

So, to answer your question about what I’m proud of, I’m proud of the ripples that not just I but all the women I work with are creating. I truly believe it’s how we begin to heal and change the world. (No pressure…lol).

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are still really new to the Los Angeles area. We moved to LA just over two years ago from Chicago, and I am a homebody at heart.
But…if we wanted to venture out, I would start with a long walk along the beach in Manhattan Beach. Then I’d head up to Malibu. I love the Malibu County Mart and would try to sneak in a quick hike along a trail while I’m there. Felix in Venice for dinner is a favorite of mine. On the weekend, we always go to the Torranice Farmer’s Market. We’ve been to all the farmer’s markets in the LA area, and this one is by far and away the best. We do all of our grocery shopping there and it has the best (and kindest) vendors. One of my favorite parts of LA is the access to incredible produce.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had so many “teachers” over the years in the yoga and meditation space, but by far and away, the biggest teachers have been all the women I have worked with. It is truly inspiring to see women, especially mothers and those later in life, reclaim their voice and their power – and it’s been what’s kept me inspired and motivated to continue on my own journey.
