We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Lew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kay, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Three habits that come to mind are Dedication, Professionalism & Perseverance: For years I dedicated my time to my secular career while always maintaining and growing my own business. There were many long days for me as I would work during the day and then work my business during the evenings and every single weekend. Even when I was tired or not feeling up to the task I always tried to make sure my clients were satisfied and catered to. I had to persevere during difficult moments and dedicate many long hours to build my business knowing that one day it would become my sole priority and my ticket out of Corporate America.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Becoming a nail technician definitely helped me tap into my creative side. But I didn’t start there. I went to school for Paralegal Studies and worked in Law Firms for over 15yrs. But I wanted to pursue my own venture. To be where I am today took a lot of blood sweat and tears, it was NOT easy and sometimes the challenges seemed to overshadow the goal but I never gave up on what I knew I wanted my real career to be. I’ve learned that in anything you do you cannot do it half hearted, if you want it to become successful you have to pour into it and help it grow, you have to stick with it even in troublesome seasons. The more you dedicate to your craft the better you become at it. When the opportunity came for me to leave Corporate America I knew then that this was my chance to give it 1000%, and it has been so worth it! Never be afraid to step out on faith, to take a chance, to BET ON YOURSELF!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I’m from Chicago one of the best cities in the world. We have the best hidden and unhidden gems in our city. First off you have to see our skyline AMAZING! Especially from the lakefront our host of rooftop bars and dining options give u a full taste of our city. Also our food some of the best places to eat are right here. Chicago Pizza hands down is the best from thin to deep dish Lou Malnati’s is my favorite pizza spot then Home Run Inn, As far as drinks and cocktails are concerned there are too many places to name but one place I like to frequent is 16th Street Bar & Lounge super cool intimate space with a cool vibe to enjoy good music and a few libations. Also our museums and architecture tours are staple tourist attractions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank three instrumental people who helped, encouraged and held my hand along the way. First would be my very first nail technician that did my nails as a teenager and young adult Nikki Battle she would let me watch and shadow her while I was a student, she did amazing work and always made her clients beyond satisfied with their service. Next would be Desi O’Kelly she supported my dream by allowing me to work in her Salon for over 15 yrs always pushing me towards entrepreneurship. Finally my big sister, dear friend and mentor Cynthia Jones taught me how to be a business woman and a go getter she always made things look so easy but I watched her work hard and reach her goals and that’s what she encouraged me to do all the way.
