We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Nine Tha Boss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay Nine Tha Boss, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had a rough childhood and home life and chose violence as a way to express myself. I was good at it, but I knew there was a better way to get out my frustrations. When I was younger I was constantly in and out of jail, but as I got older, I knew I wanted more out of life and I saw my music as my way out.
My heart is in music and I began to see it as a financial outlet as well. I got into creating music as a way to let out those frustrations, to really express myself, and to connect with people. As I grew, I saw ways to monetize my passion for music. I was tired of being in the streets and taking chances that would potentially put me back behind bars. I knew if I became successful in the music industry, I would no longer have to get money illegally and could build a business that would support me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up listening to many different genres of music. My Dad played a lot of Old School R&B and Funk, while my mom played a lot of Soul music and 80’s hits. My older brother introduced me to mainstream Hip Hop and Underground, or Indie, artists. The combination of different genres of music helped me develop an exceptional ear for music.
When creating music, I keep an open mind and explore many different sounds. If the beat is dope, then I’m going to explore it. Being a student of Hip Hop taught me to create music with a message. Whether that message is fun, serious or just a an all around good time depends on the mood I’m in. I create from my experiences so my music will always be genuine. I feel that helps people connect to what I’ve created.
I have come close to death many times and unfortunately seen, and experienced, a lot of misery firsthand. One of the most pivotal, and horrific moments in my life was when my homie Cesar got shot in the head while standing right next to me. I still have the memory of how he looked on the ground after it happened. His blood ended up all over me. I barely ate for a week straight. I didn’t realize it at the time but that was a pivotal moment in my life as I was still active in the streets.
My dedication and determination have always set me apart from other people. No matter if it was for good reasons or bad reasons, I’ve always believed that if I was going to commit to something, I would fully commit and put my all into it. I live those principles and I have applied it to my music career. Anything you want, you have to go out and get it. Success must be earned. Don’t sit around and wait for someone to teach you the way, you have to research and learn it on your own. Nobody is going to invest or support your career unless you do first, no matter how good of an artist you may believe yourself to be. I hope my story motivates other who are less fortunate. When you’re in the streets, all you see is poverty and violence. You can easily become a product of your environment and believe its normal, there is no way out. I want everyone to see its possible live a successful life without needing to put your life on the line to do so.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from Santa Ana, CA which is about 30 minutes outside Los Angeles. First thing I’m doing is taking the Homie to hit up Tapitio’s for some real authentic Mexican food. After that we hitting up Newport Beach and grabbing some drinks at Sharkey’s. It’s right on the beach so the view is dope! Later that evening we driving out to L.A. for a Lakers game. Staples Center is huge and “LA Live”, which is across the street has some of the best food and beer. I’ll let the Homie decide where to eat, way too many options, although I mess with the Chicago style pizza from Patxi’s. That’s just Day1! We are an hour drive from the mountains, 30 minutes from L.A., an hour from sand dunes and a few hours from prime camping. Hit me up when you’re in my hood!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to big a shot out to my homie C.A.U.T.I.O.N. He saw the hunger and potential in me years ago. He taught me how to complete a project without cutting any corners while dedicating his time to my success. My Family and Homies have been a huge support along my journey as well. A huge shoutout to the legendary Spice 1! I recently signed to his label T.H.U.G World Musik in 2019. Spice 1 has been giving me a lot of pointers and industry game and is a genuine friend.
