Meet Kaya Chyla | Esthetician, Lash Artist, Beauty Business Mentor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaya Chyla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaya, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
I cannot stress enough how important budgeting is and how it can turn your whole life around! You can still live your life even while budgeting. It’s especially important to plan where your money is going if you are self-employed and have your own business.
If you are someone that throws all of your money into a single account and just spend it when you need it and leave the rest in there- you are setting yourself up for potential overspending.
For my business- I pay myself weekly. I have an account all my money rolls into, and once a week from there I divide the money into other accounts. The amount that goes into each account is something that I already calculated and decided on.
The accounts are: one where I store money for taxes, business savings, and LLC costs; a second that stores my office rent (I add a few extra dollars then necessary in order to build up a little extra just in case); and a third account that pays for supply costs, and any other business expenses. The rest is profit!
I apply this same concept to my personal expenses and it’s been life changing! By the end of the month I have enough for everything that happens on a monthly basis. And week to week I have enough to cover me for the week.
For personal finances – I have a rent account, an account that shifts purpose once I reach the goal I had, one main savings account I never touch, and most importantly- my account where I put in the exact amount that I need for life each week. Once it runs out – it’s zero until I get paid again!
This account covers food, gas, hygiene products, going out etc. If I underspend and end up with extra, then I can use that later for anything I’ve been eyeballing. If it hits zero, then that’s it for the week. This is exactly what helps me stay on track week to week with my spending. I don’t limit stuff- I spend my money exactly how I want , I just make it work within my set budget for the week.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have a business called PrettyLashBae. I not only provide lash extension services, but I help mentor beauty business owners that are new to the industry or in need of a little revamp in order to start bringing in clients.
I had no idea what I was doing when I came into the beauty industry- all I had
to rely on was my previous business experience. I want to offer all the help I can to those entering the industry to make sure they can fill their books and run a successful business! I also sell products under my brand name such as lash adhesive, tweezers, and other things that lash artists need to do their work.
I’m most proud to expand my business into selling products and mentoring. Outside of lashing, I spend my days studying branding and marketing in order to gain all the knowledge I can. I listen to podcasts all day long that are business centered and those genuinely help me make decisions about the direction I want my business to go.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned in my business is that everything is doable and everything has an answer, you just need to find out more information. There are tons of people with successful businesses and we all have access to the majority of the information of how to make that happen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Funny enough, I’ve been here for eight years now, and my mom is finally planning a trip to come visit me. So I’ve actually thought a lot about lately where I want to take her.
I want to show her as much variety as possible.
1) We’ll probably drive through downtown to see some architecture.
2) Then stop through Chinatown, I think there’s a new nonalcoholic cocktail lounge there called STAY I want to check out.
3) Have to check out The Americana in Glendale of course!
4) Griffith Park- I’ve yet to go to the observatory so that would be fun!
5) Both of the Gettys, we love museums.
6) Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach.
7) I would take her to Malibu to a lovely place called Malibu Farm Cafe.
8) I think experiencing food is always the best part of a trip. I love Joey at The Village in Woodland Hills, I’d also want to take her to Harriet’s Rooftop and any nice places that has great views!
You could live here for years and still never see everything! I love the diversity of everything here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love the group of friends I’ve found out here in Los Angeles. I moved here 8 years ago and without the entrepreneurial, kind, supportive souls I’ve met out here I never would have had the courage to have my own business.
Erica is an example of a friend that truly is half the reason I keep pushing forward. She has her business for custom bachelorette party clothing (+more!) that are actually cute- you can find them at shopxmood.com. We always bounce ideas off each other and I’m so grateful!
I have friends that are in various industries that are sooo motivating and I appreciate every single one of them!
