We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaylin & Raul Cañada and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylin & Raul, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks lead us to discovering ourselves and our potential. We were each faced with unexpected challenges that forced us to grow up quickly. By 18, we were both getting started in potential long-term careers. Within a few years, we had our first son. We were young but he was the greatest thing that ever happened to us. A few months went by and we were feeling unfulfilled and under appreciated at our workplaces. So, we quit our stable jobs to not only start our own business but be present for our growing family. We had nothing but faith in our pockets – no family to help, not much savings and no plan B. It had to work. And it did. We’ve had our business now for 11 years and have 3 beautiful boys. We heard countless times that having children young, starting a business, being in love – just wasn’t in the cards for us. We knew in our hearts and we put our faith in action. We will always be grateful for the moment we decided to take the risk and leave our 9-5’s for all that we have today.
What should our readers know about your business?
Today, our firm, DESIGN BUILD LA, offers full-service real estate, interior design, project management and for select clients, we also retail finishes like countertops, tile and plumbing fixtures.
We were in the industry at a young age, and when we decided to leave our 9-5’s, we were fortunate that clients followed us and encouraged us to start our own practice. Behind the scenes we worked from home or local coffee shops and wore all of the hats – we were the accountant, the interior designer, web designer, sales manager, marketing team, etc. We still enjoy taking part in most of those roles but have learned when to ask for help and that collaboration bears many fruits. We love the quote “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”.
Along the way, we’ve had noteworthy opportunities that exceeded our dreams, such as working with brands like Pixi, Revolve, and celebrities like Kim and Kanye West.
A lot of us grow up not having a chance to tap into our gifts and talents. So we encourage everyone to get out of your comfort zone, turn down the doubts and fears and tune in to the little voice that tugs on you to spend more time on your hobby’s, apply for that dream job and reach out to those potential mentors. Experience has by far been our best teacher. And our passion for what we do is what keeps us learning and growing every day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love being outdoors. Hiking, camping, jet skiing, from the desert to the ocean and everything in between. It’s a big reason we love California so much, because we have it all. Ideally our friend would visit early spring. We’d drive up to Montecito and hike up to a hot spring. We could stay a night in Santa Barbara or Ojai nearby and explore the art galleries and mom and pop shops.
Our office is in Calabasas and we live nearby so we’d head back and hit the Calabasas stairs then head to Porta Via for lunch. They have a full bar, but their latte is a favorite and every dish is a 10. It’s all in a cute shopping center so we can walk around and maybe head to Pedalers Fork for another drink and stop by Amber Interiors Shoppe on the way.
If it isn’t too hot, we would also have to stop by Victory Trailhead for a morning walk, because the vibrant green mountains aren’t something you see everyday. We could check out yoga on the beach in Santa Monica, stop by the promenade and maybe stay a night at Santa Monica Proper Hotel. Before the week is over we’d love to visit the Broad Museum, a flea market and maybe a comedy night or live music event. We’re really lucky in LA, there’s an abundance of places to explore.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our faith and our family is what keeps us going everyday. We’re eternally inspired and motivated by our creator, our kids and each other.
