We had the good fortune of connecting with Kazual Music and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kazual, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It was only within, maybe, the last 5 to 10 years that I honestly came to the realization that “music chose me”. I honestly don’t even think that I had a choice in the matter. Ever since I could talk as a child, I’ve been singing. Ever since I could walk, I’ve been dancing, and I taught myself how to play keyboards on an old kids organ that my aunt bought for my cousin. My cousin ended up never using it at all and my aunt just gave it to me to take home since every time I would go to my aunt’s house to spend the weekends with my cousins I’d be in the room playing on it and teaching myself how to play songs from the radio while my cousins were outside playing sports and riding bicycles. Learning to play songs by Prince were my all-time favorite because his songs always had lots of synthesizer parts that were fun to figure out chord progressions to. I also adored singing his songs in the high falsetto that he always sang in which gave me lots of vocal training in learning to properly use and control my vibrato. Prince truly was my biggest influence musically overall as a kid. Michael Jackson was my 2nd biggest influence. In all honesty, I was in the greatest of hands with both of them in my overall training to become the artist, musician, singer, composer, and producer that I am today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Nowadays, with the enormous proliferation of music and artists on the scene now that have direct access to put their own music out on the market, it would be a very tall order to conjure up a definitive thing that sets one artist apart from another. My best response to that is simply that no one can be me better than I can which in general can be said for each and everyone of us. What I can honestly say is that I live my life fully free and liberated in a way that transcends into the music that I create, compose, and produce for myself and that I want to share with the world to lift them up and feel as happy and free as I do. In full transparency, I’m in my mid 50’s and I truly feel like this 2nd half of my life now is the best part because I’m finally now living life and doing things, most importantly, my music my way. For the past couple of decades or so, I placed my own music career as an artist on the back burner while creating, producing, and composing songs for other new aspiring artists to help them try and reach their dreams and goals. There was a limited amount of satisfaction in doing that as it was an outlet for me to create and delve into a myriad of different genres of music that I would never have done for myself as an artist. But still, my soul wasn’t being fed and the true me as an artist was just sitting idly by on lockdown longing to be free and come back to the forefront as it belonged. I wouldn’t necessarily say that it was easy nor was it particularly difficult. It was simply a journey that taught me a lot about people, deception, loyalty, the lack of loyalty, and growing a thicker skin to tolerate various types of personalities, etc. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is to never expect back the same type of generosity that you may have lavished upon others that you thought were truly on your side and would have your back during their times of coming up and having wonderful opportunities come their way. The stories I could tell of how people you thought were close friends over many many years or even decades will simply take and take but never come through for you as they said they would when things took off for them. But, you live and you learn and you forgive and you carry on and persevere. Now, I’ve managed to get to a place in my life where I can call my own shots and not depend on anyone to get where I desire to be musically, thank God. For me and my brand as an artist, I simply want people to come to know the name KazualMusic to be synonymous with feeling good, feeling liberated, and being happy when they hear my music and that it’s genuinely lifted straight from my heart.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place here in SoCal is Malibu. Malibu is destined to be my forever home eventually. I love taking the beautiful drive through Malibu Canyon Road from the 101 north and it ends at Pacific Coast Highway. I simply love driving into Malibu Village and having brunch at Marmalade Cafe and then just walking around through there and visiting the boutique shops. From there, I love going to Dukes right there on the coast just a few miles down and hanging out at there bar area during football season with lots of people there watching the games together and having drinks with the ocean waves crashing right behind us and sometimes seeing schools of dolphins or seals in the water. I also love taking the long, gorgeous scenic drive along the coast up north to the cozy and pretty little Danish town of Solvang just north of Santa Barbara. Get a room up there at one of the nice little cozy Inns there and hang out and relax. It’s what I call living. The beauty of the rolling hills and mountains over there is simply other-worldly. I Love it!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, first and foremost who was so supportive, loving, patient, and understanding when it came to me blasting my music in my bedroom, singing at the top of my lungs to Chaka Khan, Prince, Michael Jackson and not yelling at me to turn it down or turn it off. My aunt would be next for giving me that old brown kids organ that she actually bought for my cousin but my cousin never took any interest in it and I would always play on it and learn songs from the radio as a kid. Lastly would be myself for never giving up and dedicating my entire life to my craft.
