We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Lam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When starting The Whole Purpose my main goal was to help people who worked similar jobs to what I had in the past. Jobs with long hours, travel, client entertainment and little time for personal life. As I began the business plan for TWP I used my ‘old self’ as the primary example of the person I wanted to help. My belief is if a corporation supplies their employees with wellness opportunities that are beneficial for both mental and physical well-being not only will they have employee retention but happy and healthy employees.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Whole Purpose builds customized wellness programs for corporations. Our high-impact and integrative programs provide a comprehensive approach to wellness through a balanced lifestyle based on nutrition, physical and mental well-being. Since our programs are customized and tailored to the clients needs, this sets us apart from our competitors, no one class is alike. We pride ourselves on creating wellness programs that will excel employees to live happy and healthy lives. Our programs are unique experiences that go beyond the standard in-office wellness class.
TWP works hard at creating a safe space for employees to learn about wellness and grow a community of like-minded friends through our social networks. We provide recipes, health tips, inspirational quotes, share community events and host events to keep our followers engaged and inspired to continue their health journey outside of seeing us at their office.
I personally started my wellness journey over fifteen years ago while I was working in corporate America. Working long hours and traveling for business took a toll on my mind and body. When taking a look at myself I realized, not only was I unhappy but I was unhealthy. This is where the idea of The Whole Purpose was birthed, a company that brought wellness to the office so that time constraints of rushing to a yoga class or attempting to get the gym in before office hours was no longer a concern. Working for a company that cared for my well-being and would host classes to help me live a healthier life. Creating this brand, that can help people is what I am most proud of, helping people live Happy and healthy lives is what The Whole Purpose is all about!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love when we have friends visiting from out of town, showing them around our beach community is always a blast. A morning boardwalk walk on the Newport Beach Peninsula is a great way to check out the waves, see the beach and get some fresh air. We would grab coffee at Dory Deli to chat and make plans for the day.
My husband and I love to cook so we always plan a BBQ day at the house where we sit on the back patio, listen to music, light the fire and spend time catching up. We believe the more the merrier so this is always a great time to invite our local friends to come and meet our friends from out of town.
When visiting Newport I always plan a shopping day for ladies! Lido Marina is perfect for this, we can check out all the cute boutiques than end with a drink at the rooftop bar on the Lido Hotel. And if they still want to keep going, we head to the Elks Lodge for dinner and some live music.
During their visit we will plan to hit the beach on a sunny day for some beach time. I grab some Wahoos to-go for lunch, eat on the beach, play in the water and soak up some rays. My husband loves to take our guests surfing, so if the waves are good he will be in the ocean with them. And if they have kiddos, my son and I will head the little ones down to the Lighthouse Park for some fun at the park on bay.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have two people I want to thank for all the love and help through The Whole Purpose journey. First my husband, Wing, who truly pushed me to go after my dream and supported me while I was going to school, working a full time job and teaching yoga all while building a business plan. There was a lot going on at once and he stuck by my side! And secondly, my ride or die, Marnie, who has been a part of The Whole Purpose family for so many years and deals with all my crazy ideas and long winded conversations! Without Wing and Marnie I’m not sure where I would be.
