We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Basically, I’m not good at anything else..
I’m no good at math, I failed every science class I’ve ever taken. I was an awful student – hated School. Growing up was hard, kids I went to school with weren’t friendly. I struggled with depression and anxiety like most creatives and so my escape was watching movies and creating my own stories. Self expression in storytelling helped me cope with the turmoils and uncertainty of adolescences – and honestly continues to in my adult life.
When I taught my self how to use the primal windows movie maker at age 13 – I got excited about creating something out of nothing. I think that’s the high most artists get – taking an idea and turning It into something tangible.
I have been a video editor ever since – I turn 31 end of February.
Art brings people together. It’s supportive, thought provoking and empathic. I will never say that the TV shows or media I cut/ produce will ever be more important that the Mathematicians or scientists trying to help make the world a better place. But those people need an escape as well. They turn to movies to relax or their emotional support TV show after a long day too. The artist and Brains have to support each other and I’m grateful to be the artist because thats what I’m good at.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think my story is similar to most LA transplants. I moved here with no money and half thought out idea. I’ve bounced around from every post production job I could find. Mostly having to start over in the career trek because the industry itself is just so unstable. I always try to make sure I learn as much as I can though. Each role I’ve had has helped in an unexpected way in the next role…and in that way, its been comforting to realize that a job i once thought was a waste of time – wasn’t in retrospect.
I guess what is different about me is that I am very persistent. I haven’t thrown in the towel yet and I recognized early that the universe is going to throw things at me and that’s more beneficial to catch everything instead of being selective.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My dream itinerary (traffic willing) Would be:
1. Brunch on the roof at the Waldorf Astoria – spending as little as I can honestly, just there for the views.
2. Next an entire afternoon at the Getty museum – this is my happy place, my absolute favorite place to visit on this planet.
3. Late sunset dinner at Crudo De nudo in Santa Monica
4. And then bar hopping on the sunset strip. One of the most historic places in LA in my opinion.
Rest of week will be reserved for Malibu beaches – I grew up in the midwest so I try to see the ocean as often as I can.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe most of my success to my family and friends. Its a privilege to have a support system and most people who do what I do, don’t always have people they can fall back on. I am truly Grateful.
