We had the good fortune of connecting with Kemal Cilengir and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kemal, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My friends and fellow artists. Being out in the streets knowing that my friends are by my side documenting the same events or just out shooting street photography keeps me going. Everyday I am inspired by their determination and the images they create. Their consistency, talent, and growth gets me out of the house and back on the grind.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Street photography is my love. It is the way I am able to express myself and I am lucky to have found and connect with such incredibly talented and genuine people through it. All of my opportunities to grow have been cultivated through the connections with my peers. Photography and street photography specifically is not for the faint of heart. To this day, this is still not my full-time job and I work a 9-5 . I do feel lucky to work at a job that I am able to get off of early which allows me time to pursue my passion. Like any pursuit of passion, building a strong foundation will yield the best results. Consistency, be it once a day, once a week, or even once a month is the key to being successful in any art form.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Right now with the current state of the world I would take a friend to do outdoor activities, I love riding a bike up and down the bike path in Venice and Santa Monica. Also, the Santa Monica and Malibu mountains have some amazing hikes that you can enjoy year around. As things slowly begin to open up, I would take them to some of the amazing museums we have here in LA. The Broad, LACMA, MOMA, and one of my personal favorites, “The Museum of Jurassic Technology” on Venice in Culver City. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
