We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennya Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennya, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way I think about risk is the same way I think about breathing, eating or sleeping, it has to happen if you want to succeed. In no situation you will be able to achieve what you want if you are in a complete comfort zone. It will be scary and very intimidating but what I love to remind myself is that everybody is in the same feeling or has felt the same way as I or has been through a very similar experience, so the thought of knowing that I am not the first person to take risk in my life and also will not be the last makes me feel way more motivated and ready for what is to come. I feel as my culture and home which is Puerto Rico also prepared me to be this way in life. Since growing in the island the only way to evolve is to get out of your comfort zone and take a bunch or risk for yourself, your family and career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently a Production Supervisor at Brat TV which is pretty crazy since I’ve always wanted to be on Disney Channel and I’m working at one of the biggest kid/teen show channels, so full circle indeed. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico with music being very present in my life. Grew up in a music school called “La Libre de Música Ernesto Ramos Antonini” playing the euphonium, trombone, piano, singing and was very involved in Ballet since my mom is a dancer/ teacher herself. My life has always been around entertainment and during my senior year I decided to go and study film at Full Sail University where I did my Bachelors Degree. It has been a real journey and a tough one as well, but have found so many amazing people and have gained so much experience a long the way and still am. I do have to say being a filmmaker it’s a life style, you don’t have the normal “9 to 5” you have the normal “I will never have a set schedule but hey we are here for it” kind of life. Everyday is never the same, there will always be new challenges that present to you and you will always have to come up with creative ways to solve them. At my position at Brat TV we work with a lot of scripted content and I’m in charge of the AD Department on set, oversee talent with the help of our Talent Coordinators, in charge of making call sheets, production reports, making sure our kids get school, have fun and anything that has to do with scheduling on set that’s right up my ally. Recently during the pandemic I’ve been more involved creatively working side by side with our Creative Producer which has been really fun. In all honesty it does get very frustrating at times because it’s such a heavy and busy lifestyle that most of the times you forget your goals and sense of motivation. I do not say this to be all depressed or like “never do film it sucks” on the contrary I am saying this so anybody who wants to join this beautiful mess called the “Hollywood baby” business to always get creative on putting yourself first so you can give your best at your personal goals, social life and work life. The best part of it all you will learn how to be resilient as heck! During these past two years I’ve been more involved in my own personal growth and passion which is truly music. Don’t get me wrong I love working with kids/ teens and love working in the digital media industry, but where I really feel at home and happy is whenever I do music. So every time I’m off or get home after a long set day I sit down and practice my music theory, keep on learning logic pro x through so many youtube videos, write my songs (I am very emotional), produce them and hopefully by the end or even before this 2021 ends I will be able to release my EP. This year I’ve also learned to love where I am now and to enjoy every second of my present self and present situation, it has truly changed my work and growth perspective. As Willie Colón and Rubén Blades said in their song “Pedro Navaja” “La vida te da sorpresas, sorpresas te da la vida ¡ay, Dios!” you never know what life has in store for you so appreciate every single moment, live now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite place to take people that are visiting LA is to go to the Griffith Observatory. It is truly my favorite place in Los Angeles, it’s beautiful views and their wonderful show called “Across the Universe” where you get to see the stars, just always puts me back in my place and makes me feel so motivated. It also let you know that you are truly never alone, there is so much happening around you all the time and that makes me feel connected with the person who might be next to me even tho it’s a total stranger, it’s like we are all in the same floating rock in the middle of literally nowhere you like it or not. My next place to take people would be driving around Mulholland drive, Laurel Canyon and getting to see the lights at night all over the city of Los Angeles and the Valley. It’s great to see things from a different perspective to actually let every thing sink in and realize where you are at. Also a lot of hiking, any where in LA hikes is always so beautiful. Riding bikes is also one of my favorite things to do with people who are visiting and going to El Matador Beach while also driving through the Malibu Mountains. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest shout out to my family who has always pushed me to be the best version of myself everyday and my friends who are always supporting me no matter how crazy my dreams are. Mami, Papi, abuelas y abuelos, Rocio, Yelena, Christopher, Valerie, David de Leon, Allison, Kyle, Emily, Madison, Astrid, Fefa, Gabriela, John, Monika, Nacho, Maria all of you, and for those who I’m missing but do love, thank you for always being present and so motivating in my life!
