We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenyatti Hellum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenyatti, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson I learned from my business is that there isn’t a such thing as an overnight success. A business is like a baby. You have to constantly feed it and take care of it for it to grow. In the 3 years I’ve been in business I learned there’s always something to do! Along with that I learned that it’s really a journey and everyone’s journey is different.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a lash company called LashKandii. I created the company in 2017 originally called “OfficialSBY” we re branded in 2020 to “LashKandii”. in 2017 I was still in college and I was also a makeup enthusiast. I always did my makeup and I couldn’t live without lashes. I also didn’t have a lot of money as a college student so glam on a budget was my thing. I always wanted nice quality lashes and couldn’t always afford them that’s what drove me to create the brand. I always tell people now, if you can find a problem, along with a good solution you have a business! My first year in business wasn’t easy and we finished 2017 with making not even $500 in sales online. I struggled even though I was a marketing major, I knew nothing about selling online. I started to teach myself everything about Ecommerce and the beauty industry and finished the next year doing over 30,000 in sales. The rest is history.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love eating out so we’d have a list of restaurants to visit, I live downtown LA which is where lots of my favorite spots are. We’d do brunch at Perch LA one of my favorite rooftops here. Then we’ll probably hit the downtown fashion district. I love going there cause I love shopping and always get good deals in Santee alley. Then we’d probably have dinner at Joey DTLA w a spot I eat at nearly weekly. The next morning we’ll get a hike in at Mt Hollywood or Culver City stairs. I enjoy hiking and I always try to take my friends when they visit because it’s soothing and the views are always amazing. For the night we’ll probably hit Tekilla in Hollywood for Mexican food and drinks, they have some of the best margaritas to me and it’s always a vibe there. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always give lots of credit to my friends on helping me with my business. They were my first and only customers for a while. Without them I wouldn’t have had the courage to keep going.
