We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Bouknight and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being creative is a ‘creature’ that ‘eats’ whatever keeps them ‘alive.’ Knowing that there is only one me sets me apart from others. Having that self-realization did not come easy because when I started to create my brand, there was a lot of self-comparison to others. When you do that you blind yourself from what is authentic and genuine to yourself. You start to develop a vision of others rather than what is for others. In 2020 I sat down and mapped out the end goal for where I saw my brand. In doing so, I began to understand that I wouldn’t know where to start if I didn’t shift my focus to knowing my overall end goal/purpose. When I did that, I stopped comparing myself to others. I then realized you couldn’t compare your opening paragraph to someone else’s chapter 3. That has sustained everything I do to fulfill my brand’s purpose. The following quote embodies the essence of my brand and how I maneuver in any creative space: “If what you’re doing isn’t meaningful to the soul of a person, you’re only entertaining yourself.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve grown to know Los Angeles as a place to seize the moment. There are many opportunities to take advantage of, and you can lose yourself if you’re not careful. However, this lends opportunities for new adventures and ways to experience something you’ve never done before. For example, I would explore LA Bucket List. They always post new pop-up attractions and hidden gems not apparent to the LA tourist. I would also browse resort passes; they often have great deals on rooftops, pools, and day parties. Some of my go-to food spots are Sage Plant-Based Bistro, Stevies Creole Cafe, Coffee Company, Blue Jam Cafe, or BlaqHaus NoHo. If you want some excellent dessert, you don’t want to miss Mastro’s butter cake or the beignets from Beignet Box – OMG! And then you always have the brunch spots and day parties you want to hit up on Sunday Funday. I would check Eventbrite, as there is always something to check out there, but hitting up the WeHo area or a place like Saint and Sinners is a sure way to get your day jumping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In the physical realm, I want to acknowledge my brother and sister, Brandon “Kas” Johnson and Nikol Bouknight. These two have consistently supported me in moving forward and making challenging decisions. More importantly, when I doubt myself at my lowest, they remind me to value myself because I am the greatest. However, I have to make it known that I would not be here without listening to God’s voice and having faith in his promises. Even as I write this, I recall moments when I’ve doubted him. But then, when I feel like I’ve accomplished little to nothing, He reminds me I’m chosen for a reason and that my trial is someone else’s testimony. One has to make a conscious effort to believe in that notion and understand that not everything will be black and white – it’s the gray areas that allow us to add color.
