Meet Kevin Hernandez | Florist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I have given myself the freedom to really let my creativity run wild with every piece that I create. From the colors, patterns and textures each piece tells a unique story that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. By being true to myself and allowing my experiences as a queer artist to influence my creative process, I have built a strong foundation for my creativity to thrive off of. This is the most important factor behind my success and is the reason why each person can connect to my work differently. I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received since starting my business. My work has allowed me to authentically express my ideas and share my art with the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Utilizing my unique experiences as a queer latinx artist to express myself artistically has been a key factor in what sets me apart from others. I like to believe that my approach to my work is fearless, eclectic, and spontaneous, which allows me to continue to push my creative boundaries. As my work continues I am excited to venture into working on more elaborate orders that will allow me the freedom to express myself on a bigger scale. Think more colors, bigger flowers and even more elaborate ideas! Although I am super excited about where my business is headed, the road to get here has not been seamless. Along with a global pandemic that the entire world is facing there has been emotional turmoil tied to the day to day struggles of navigating life as a young queer artist. In order to push through these obstacles I remind myself how grateful I am that I get to be creatively fulfilled in the work that I do. Having that luxury allows me to continue to push forward with a brave face. Regardless of any struggles that you might face as a young artist, always remember to hone in on the emotional attachment to the work that you create. As long as you love what you do, everything else will fall into place. This philosophy is something I have been applying to my life for years. Both my brand and my business were founded on the same philosophy and I hope to continue to create beautiful works of art that advocate for authenticity and creative expression.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Showing friends around LA is a specialty of mine! I’d recommendI’d recommend first starting off chill by going to the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Shortly after we’d grab a quick bite at the Jewel Cafe in Silver Lake before taking a mini road trip to Malibu or Point Dume to have a beach picnic and catch the sunset! I’d say that would be my ideal places to go all year round!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out to my partner Denishio Murray, who inspired the start of my business. It was his birthday and I was looking around the floral district to find a gift. I wanted something that matched his beautiful energy. I continued to look around and saw nothing that really matched. I knew I had to create my own. So I did and I fell in love with the process of creating that floral arrangement. I knew it was something I had to make a career out of! I was tired of working a 9-5 and wanted to create and be happy. I’m a person who usually goes 1000 MPH and when creating floral arrangements you have to take your time. It is so therapeutic, I’m so thankful for this new career path I’m on. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting my business!
