We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Vaisman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Miami, USA but was raised in Caracas, Venezuela since the age of 2. Growing up in Caracas played a significant role in shaping my career as a multidisciplinary motion graphics designer. Caracas, with its vibrant, diverse culture and strong design sensibility, offered a rich tapestry of traditions, art, and modernist influences. This environment fostered a broad perspective and deep appreciation for various artistic styles, nurturing my passion for visual arts.
The city’s thriving arts scene provided ample opportunities to immerse myself in different forms of artistic expression, refining my skills and broadening my creative horizons. This dynamic setting taught me resilience and adaptability, essential qualities in the fast-paced design industry.
Moving to Los Angeles further pushed my competitive drive. Known for its cutting-edge creative industries, the city demanded continuous innovation and excellence, driving me to hone my skills and stay ahead of trends. This move expanded my professional network and exposed me to new opportunities and challenges, reinforcing my commitment to my craft.
With nearly 20 years of experience, my journey from Caracas to Los Angeles has profoundly influenced my design approach. The cultural richness of Caracas and the competitive spirit of Los Angeles have shaped my creative vision, allowing me to bring a unique perspective to every project. This foundation has been pivotal in building a successful career, blending diverse influences into compelling visual narratives.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wouldn’t say it was easy to get to where I am now, but it wasn’t terribly difficult either. It just took time, the ability and passion to always want to keep learning, and a commitment to connecting with fellow designers, creative directors, and clients. All of that, compounded over 20 years, brought me to where I am today.
I don’t think there’s much to say about my brand and story, but there’s a lot to discuss about the story of the motion design industry as a whole. In my opinion, it’s a great career choice if you’re willing to remember that you’re a service professional first and an artist second. Your ideas can move forward if you listen to your clients’ needs.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Mid City and love the Westside of LA. I would definitely plan a day at the Getty Center, visit the Santa Monica Pier, and the Griffith Observatory is a must. I’d grab a pizza at Pizzeria Sei, go for some Kazunori, and try to choose which beer to get at Father’s Office.
If it’s a hot summer day, I’d spend it at Malibu’s Staircase Beach, so we can take my dog with us. In the morning, I’d probably try to sneak in a hot yoga class at Yoga by Joe K.
I’d definitely visit The Broad one day, walk over to The Last Bookstore and Grand Central Market, and leave another day for The Grove and The Farmers Market on Third.
Oh, and definitely head up to Magic Mountain one day, if they’re up for it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to recognize my design mentor, Alvaro Sotillo, whose guidance has been instrumental in shaping my career. As a Gutenberg Prize winner, Alvaro’s exceptional contributions to design have inspired many, including myself. His mentorship has profoundly impacted my journey, enhancing my skills and instilling in me a deep appreciation for storytelling through design.
I also want to give a shoutout to Zoic Studios, where I had my first internship and job in Los Angeles. The experience I gained there and the people I met were invaluable, providing a solid foundation for my career in motion design.
Finally, I am deeply grateful to my wife and family for their unwavering belief in me. Their support and encouragement have been my foundation, giving me the strength and motivation to pursue my dreams.
