We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Wilkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I love the art of visual storytelling. I have been inspired by many different artists. I am a fan of art. Whether it’s filmmaking, photography, paint, architecture, food, music or fashion. I try to embrace it all. It feels like where I’m supposed to be, it feels like home.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Basic photography emphasizing color and composition. Sometimes in black and white. The challenge for me is to get out of the way and allow the image come through. Sometimes the process can be difficult, but that’s where the magic usually happens. I do a lot of personal projects to stay nimble. If I’m not growing, I am dying.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m located in the Orange County. I’m at the beach when I have free time. I like the Newport Aquatic Center, The Long Beach aquarium. I will get a burger at Win-Dow in Long Beach. Catch a show at The Observatory. Or visit the taco trucks in Santa Ana.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been fortunate that I have had a lot of good people who have helped, supported mentored and inspired me. Starting when I was 14. First of all, mom and dad. Surfer Magazine photo editor Art Brewer got me pointed in the right direction. Larry Moore at Surfing, Peter Brouillet, Aaron Chang, Dave Bjorn, Danny Kwock at Quiksilver. Later on Christina Kelly, Sully Jacome. Jeff Lewis, Johnny Tracey, and Heathyr Lawrence. And all the others who let me sleep on couches and invited me into their homes.
