We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Chastain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I left my first career in Higher Education in 2011 I made a conscious decision – I was never going to work for anyone again. Despite my struggles and defeats in the process of digging myself out of mounds of debt and personal strife in my 30’s, my decision to be a business owner never wavered, and I don’t regret anything that I’ve gone through in order to create the brand, business and life that I have today.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? I want the world to know that this company is about empowering women to harness their inner genius so that they can live lives that they love. As much as we talk about money, the reason any of the work I do matters is that there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of women who are holding themselves back, staying in abusive relationships, toxic jobs, and unhealthy bodies because they don’t believe that they’ll ever have the money they need to start a new chapter in their lives. My mission, vision and brand is here to tell them that they are possible, and what they want is possible. There are easy, simple and logical steps to getting started TODAY, and we are here to teach them how to take one step after the next so that they can steadily start living lives filled with love, health, and fun!

We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
I’ll be honest. Money is boring, and the money world is filled with experts who are beating people over the head with information overload! What sets the Girl, Get Your $hit Together Brand apart from others is that we’re more committed to speaking the language of real people. We keep our strategies, tools and programs PEOPLE focused – the numbers come later….and are not the entire focus! LIFE is the focus.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy?
I am where I am today in business because I have woken up every day committed to building a business and life that makes a difference each and every day. I woke up in 2016 broke, on the verge of divorce, in a negative cash flow position in my business and totally out of alignment with my firm. I had lost my way, and I was really scared that I was going to lose everything. My journey of becoming a business owner and voice in the field of personal finance has been the most difficult journey of my life to date. In addition to being a single mom, going through a divorce and blowing through my life savings of over $100,000 by the time I was 38, I birthed a business, brand, wrote a book and totally redesigned my life. I overcame my challenges by being willing to let go of toxic relationships, setting clear and healthy boundaries with myself and others, by sticking to my vision of helping millennial women get their $hit together, attracting new and healthy relationships both professionally and personally and waking up every damn day fighting for what I want. I got creative with financing, forgave myself (often) and serve as often as possible at church and in my community.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. The most powerful lesson I’ve learned over the past 10 years is that NO ONE IS COMING. No one is coming to save me, or make it happen for me. I am the one that is 100% responsible for my past, present and future and if I want to make an impact, make money, and help others I am the one that is going to have to make it happen. I had a limiting belief in my life that somehow someone was going to make it happen for me. It crippled me. When I learned to accept total and radical responsibility for all results in my life – my life changed for the better. I am forever grateful for that lesson. I also learned that just because someone has been in my life a long time does not mean that they have to stay in my life. Relationships evolve and it’s important to make necessary shifts as much as possible in order to continue to elevate and grow in my life and in business. I give myself grace and space for relationships to evolve.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas where I still live today. I hardly ever go to the Strip – my favorite places are very close to home!

Day 1: A half day at Lake Las Vegas! We’d have coffee and a little brunch and then head straight to the spa. We’d end the day at home with some dinner with the family and a good card game.

Day 2: A long hike with the dogs – Las Vegas has the most amazing hiking trails all around the city! We’d pick a trail and go for it – and take the dogs with lots of water and sunscreen.

Day 3: Do something whacky! We’d dress up as tourists, and check out the city as tourists. There’s a really cool art gallery that just opened up – we’d grab some Thai food and head over to Area 15 for an early evening experience – home by 9pm!

Day 4: We’d have to go to a Vegas Golden Knights Game! Our driver will pick us up at 3:00 p.m. and we’d head to T-Mobile Arena to check out the pre-game festivities at The Park – play some games and have a couple of cocktails then head to the game – then straight home 🙂

Day 5: Time to say goodbye! We’d wake up early, and go for a long walk with the pups up to the hills by my house – watch the sun rise and reflect on our lives and we’re most looking forward to in the year. I’d drive her to the airport after breakfast with the family and we’d set the dates for my visit to her next (taking turns is always the best!).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first shoutout is to God for seeing me through the darkness so I can live the life that He has planned for me.  I’m not who I am today without my family.  My husband teaches me daily about the power of unconditional love.   My son has been my greatest teacher, and my step-son continues to school me on how to choose love even on the hard days. I am the coach and mentor I am today because of Robyn Crane and the FEMMs. They are my fuel when I’m running on empty or when I get really stuck. My core peeps keep me grounded and inspire me daily – Emily, Gail, Ashley, Summer, I love you mucho!
