We had the good fortune of connecting with Khadijah Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Khadijah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a mother of two children on the autism spectrum, I’ve personally experienced the significant lack of programs and resources available to caregivers in our community. This issue becomes even more pronounced in the black community, where resources for children with autism are often scarce, and support for their caregivers is almost nonexistent. This realization led me to establish the Autism Mom Club, with a primary focus on addressing the needs of parents.
One day, while contemplating what was missing beyond the therapies and interventions my children were receiving, I began to make a list of my own needs as a caregiver. I realized that, as a mother, I needed assistance with everyday tasks like laundry, cooking, and cleaning, especially since I was frequently drained by the end of the day. Furthermore, I recognized the importance of having a safe and reliable place for my children to go when I needed a break.
Parenting children on the autism spectrum presents unique challenges, and finding trustworthy individuals to care for your children while you run errands, take a nap, read a book, or simply engage in some self-care can be exceptionally challenging. This is where the idea of community support comes into play. Our communities used to be tight-knit, with people helping each other out in various ways. I chose to name our initiative the Autism Mom Club because I wanted it to reflect the spirit of a community coming together to help one another in ways that might not be immediately obvious to those who aren’t in our shoes.
Ultimately, our goal is to rally others to join our cause, recognizing that parenting is a difficult journey, irrespective of the circumstances. The Autism Mom Club is about creating a support network where caregivers can find the help and understanding they need while emphasizing the importance of community and collaboration in easing the challenges that come with parenting children on the autism spectrum.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a serial entrepreneur and run several businesses. The journey is never easy or else everyone would be doing it. The key to my success in all I do is my faith in God and resiliency. The ability to bounce to back knowing where my strength lies. I’m most proud of my work to create programs to help other entrepreneurs create a legacy for their family. I’m big on creating generational wealth as well as generational wisdom and community building. This new project is a labor of love as most of projects are but basically when I see a need in my community I aim to fill it. I want to be a blessing to all I serve.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am grateful for my friends and family. They are my support system, always ready to listen to my wildest ideas and, more importantly, willing to roll up their sleeves to help bring them to fruition. Their unwavering faith in me, even when my ambitions seem audacious, has been a driving force behind my accomplishments.
In this shoutout, I’d like to shine a spotlight on my intimate circle of friends, my cherished family members, and the incredible online community I’ve been fortunate to build. Their consistent presence and unwavering support have not only empowered me but have also contributed significantly to the success of my various initiatives.
Through the ups and downs of my journey, these individuals have been my pillars of strength, and I’m incredibly fortunate to have them in my life. They’ve stood by me, offered their wisdom, and generously shared their own experiences, enabling me to continue pursuing my passions and dreams. Their collective impact on my life is immeasurable, and I can’t thank them enough for being my source of inspiration and encouragement.
