We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara Ana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiara, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I truly believe that this is an ultimate goal; to be able to work and live and play and relax in a supported, productive, fun and full life experience. I have found that I am in my deepest state of flow and artistic expression when I am more in alignment with my work life balance. I feel so fortunate to be working in spaces that often feel like play or like the “life” part of the equation. The challenge lies here: since my work brings me so much fulfillment and consists of the moments that spark joy, I can deplete myself completely before realizing that I need to balance the scales again. When I am teaching 6 yoga classes a day and performing 6 concerts a week I am equally lighting and extinguishing my fire. For me, finding the balance has shifted through the years as my work as evolved, and in this moment I feel like the balance is in the little things. It’s waking up 30 minutes earlier to meditate, it’s eating breakfast on the porch without my phone, taking the time to make a homemade dinner for guests, it’s reading a book in bed at night, and occasionally, it’s taking a few days trip to Ojai or booking a massage or a pedicure.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a musician. I play viola and violin in all kinds of settings from live TV to arena touring, from small basement clubs to remote recording in my home studio and I am grateful for it all. I believe myself to be quite malleable and able to adapt into the different musical situations that present themselves on a daily basis. It has not been easy but I have been quite fortunate. I work really hard every day and I also know and am constantly learning that I have a lot of privilege. I took up yoga as a way to recalibrate my body and mind and spirit through all the wild rides of the entertainment industry. It has now become another full artistic expression for me as I’ve really grown to love teaching and sharing what I’ve learned through the practice and the trainings I’ve attended. I think music and yoga blend really beautifully and seamlessly and they are completely interconnected in my life now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh this is SO fun. Too many to choose from!! Okay well, I don’t drink alcohol so I’m not going to be super fun in that category although I do like going to fancy bars and seeing what kind of mocktail the bartender can come up with for me!

For me, a week in LA MUST include:
-an early morning stroll through the downtown flower market with hands free for all the plants and shower eucalyptus we’ll buy
-exploring the boulders and caves and beaches in Malibu
-a colorful afternoon at the Huntington Garden and/or Descanso Gardens
-eating at as many vegan restaurants as possible (this will most likely take more than a week)
-morning hike every day
-a few choice yoga classes and/or workshops
-roller skating in Venice
-endless thrifting
-if there’s time: an overnight escape to Ojai and/or Lake Arrowhead/Crestline

okay, who’s coming to visit me in LA!?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could not be more grateful for my chosen family in Los Angeles. I have lived in LA for the past 8 years and I have met some really truly remarkable people in my time in the city of angels. When I was 12 and at chamber music camp, I discovered my absolute love for chamber music and string quartets. In 2016, Molly, Desiree, Leah and myself founded Orchid Quartet and 5 years later I could not imagine my life without this group or these people. My husband, Kiel is a constant source of love and support and I am so grateful we get to share this life together. Every day I get to play music with colleagues and meet new ones. It’s an honor. In the yoga world I get to teach in person classes, online classes and deepen my own practice. The life I am building is held up and reinforced by the souls who surround me.
