We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara Hatcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiara, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I believe starting my own business is the most important thing I’ve done as a parent so far. My son is only two years old, but my drive and determination has become so much stronger since becoming a mom. Honestly, I don’t think I would have ever started my business if it weren’t for him. I now have this urge to want to reach my full potential, but in order to do that I have to work hard, take risks and discover what truly makes me happy. I feel those are all great traits to show my son. In the long run, having my own business allows me to create my own work-life balance that works best for us.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I truly believe I got to where I am today because of my work ethic and experience. Overall, I’ve worked in the fashion industry for 10 years; since I was 17 years old. I’ve worked in numerous retail positions which allowed me to see how retail works from the ground up. I’ve worked in stockrooms, fitting rooms, on the salesfloor, at the cash register, etc. I also learned how to give great customer service. Then I went on to study Fashion Merchandising and Marketing in college, which taught me how to create displays and present fashion to customers in an appealing way.

During college, I had a couple of internships which led me down the path of becoming a Stylist. As a Stylist, I learned how to be more creative with fashion and think outside the box. I also learned the importance of collaborating with make-up artists, hair stylists, photographers, models etc. It’s truly a team effort to deliver the best look. It wasn’t always easy. There were times where I had to juggle my school work, my retail job, my internships, and styling all at the same time. However, fashion is something that I love so my passion made it easier to work through those times. I’ve learned that sometimes starting at the bottom is the best thing you can do for your career. You gain so much knowledge and experience and you tend to appreciate that next level even more. All of my experience has paved the way for me to start my online boutique, Kapsule.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from LA so the beach is a must! Santa Monica is always great because you can eat, shop, and go to the beach all in one area. But my friends and I also love going to sit at the beach in Playa Del Rey because it’s smaller and more lowkey. After a day at the beach we typically end up at Cabo Cantina for their 2 for 1 happy hour deal. We always order strawberry-mango margaritas and share a big plate of asada nachos! During the weekend we’re always in the mood for brunch. Catch in West Hollywood has a really nice atmosphere with rooftop views. My friends and I love dressing up and having girls night and we usually end up at Beauty and Essex in Hollywood. Its a sophisticated vibe and there’s really cute photo spots here.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to CSUN! (Cal State University Northridge). My business idea for Kapsule actually stems from a school project that was assigned to me during my senior year. I spent the whole semester creating my business plan. Shoutout to all of my family and friends that have turned into active customers!
