We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a former NCAA Division 1 athlete, physical fitness, wellness and nutrition have always been my passion. While competing in swimming at The Ohio State University and trying out for the Olympics I had an opportunity to learn from some incredible sport Dietitians and Physicians who really taught me the value of how critical nutrition is for successful performance at an elite level. Quality food intake to support recovery from training and competition performance is an essential part of competition at a high level in sport. While competition as a student-athlete I studied health science – this is primarily where my love for proactive healthcare and nutrition started to develop. After trying out for the Olympics on two separate occasions, I decided to retire from swimming and focus on my studies in nutrition and physiology. I went on to complete a Masters and work for Soccer Canada (Women’s National Team) where I learned about using data and analytics to longitudinally monitor athlete health status. This learning experience with a National team is where my thought process began in applying proactive monitoring and preventative healthcare to the general population. I started business (nutrition private practice) to make the resources I was using with elite athletes (Ie. analyzing hormones, nutrition deficiencies, metabolism, genetics etc.) and apply this into the non-athletics world to help people with the early-detection of chronic diseases. My goal is to motivate, educate, and empower people to take charge of their health (just as an elite athlete would) so they can achieve optimal mental and physical performance and maximize longevity.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Just over 4 years ago I made the move to Los Angeles, once COVID hit I was faced with numerous challenges being away from family. I realized that I could either stay stuck in an obstacle or push forward and persevere so I decided to use the extra time on my hands to launch a virtual consulting nutrition practice. The practice was centered on personalized meal planning. I worked to develop a website and slowly started gathering a client-base. At first, I had a lot of issues in launching a website and was nervous to showcase it to the world. I tended to procrastinate a lot and felt like it was never perfect enough to launch. However, once I did launch the website it slowly started to build and take off. As the business started to grow over the past couple of years, it has now transformed into a practice that specializes in both nutrition programming and lab panel analysis. My mission is to empower people to be proactive about their health by providing them with the education, tools, and resources they need to not only achieve their health goals but to maximize longevity.
As far as what separates me from others, I run all aspects of the business from the administration, website management, financing, consulting, and program development. This means that clients can expect quality care and results. I really take time to get to know my clients in order to develop programs that are personalized to them and that cater to their individual lifestyle. Regarding my brand/story – I’d like the world to know that my passion is rooted in personalized, preventative healthcare and that it’s my mission to ensure clients feel empowered and motivated to transform their health. It’s never to late to make a change – small daily changes each day will always go a long way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting me here in Los Angeles for a week trip here’s the spots I’d be sure to take her to! I spend most of my time on the Westside of LA but on occasion for special events I’d take her over to West Hollywood!
1. I live in Santa Monica so I’d definitely take her on some epic hikes nearby in malibu including Solstice Canyon and Paseo Miramar Trails. After a long hike we’d definitely stop by Juicy Ladies and Erewhon in the Pacific Palisades for smoothies and healthy snacks. We’d for sure get in some afternoon beach time in malibu at Point Dume or Zuma Beach. The Sunset Restaurant sits right on Zuma beach in malibu and is a great sunset watch spot!
2. For dinner in Santa Monica we’d do Ivy on the Shore because her and I are both big seafood lovers! Another great option for rooftop views is Calabra on the roof of the Santa Monica Proper Hotel.
2. For amazing food I’d take her to some of my favorite lunch spots in Venice – Gjusta and for dinner we’d definitely do Gjelina for excellent food. After dinner, we’d stop by Market with friends for some excellent wine and ambiance
3. For activities on other days, we’d for sure do a comedy show at the laugh factory or an art show in the art district. I love arts and crafts so we might try doing an intro pottery making class in Santa Monica at ‘Color Me Mine.’
4. We’re both pasta lovers, so I’d take her to Antico Nuevo for dinner one night to show her some incredible Italian food.
5. I’m a very active person so we’d definitely do a few pilates classes at Megaformer Studio with one of my fav instructors (Eric). We’d also do some hot yoga at Sweat Yoga in Santa Monica. I’m a big tennis player as well so I’d take her to the courts in Santa Monica or we’d do some beach tennis with some friends at Santa Monica beach!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my incredible parents for dedicating their time and effort in supporting me throughout my athletic and academic career. They are my #1 motivators and full-time supporters. As far as mentors go, I’d like to give a shoutout to my Master of Science supervisor Michael Koehle – forever grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best. Thanks for challenging me to never give up and to always persevere.
