We had the good fortune of connecting with King Inesse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi King, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is probably one of the most important-if not THE most important, factor in making your dreams come true. Taking risks has a huge role in not only my career but my life. We take risks every day, some smaller than others.

I believe risk is stepping out of your comfort zone, with the hopes that this potential step you take will somehow, someway, benefit you. When I first started DJ’ing and breaking out of my comfort zone and doing more live sets, using more advanced equipment, dj’ing in front of bigger crowds, I knew this was something I wanted to dedicate my life to.

At this point in my life I was working at a pretty popular sneaker boutique in Chicago called Boneyard and I loved my job! But I knew there was something bigger waiting for me, I knew I had to sacrifice the life of comfort and certain stability to reach something bigger. I decided after 3 awesome years of working at Boneyard it was time for me to say goodbye and make DJ’ing the center of my life. I didn’t want DJ’ing to be a little side hobby for me, I wanted it to be my CAREER. I wanted to create a life for myself through it. I considered the potential things that could go wrong; “What if I quit and I’m not getting enough DJ gigs to pay my rent? My car note? What if I quit and it just doesn’t work out?” But my gut kept saying “What if IT DOES work out in your favor?” , and I would never know the answer unless I tried.

So I put in my two week notice at work & the rest is history. I’ve been DJ’ing full time ever since. I couldn’t be anymore thankful and blessed. If it wasn’t me willing to sacrifice losing everything, I would’ve never know what was waiting for me on this side of the road.

Take that risk. Trust me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I definitely consider myself as a creative overall. Not only do I DJ but I curate events, I’m a content creator, model, creative director, stylist, and the list goes on… I originally started DJ’ing with a solid social media platform so that helped A LOT. I created a Youtube Channel back in 2017 and had a few videos that went viral which lead me to hit 10K subscribers in 2019. Having a loyal fanbase of people who already admired me and supported me helped graciously.

Not a single part of chasing your dreams is easy. I worked hard for every single part of it. Staying consistent is key, I’ve always made sure to stay consistent regardless of the moments I may doubt myself. Sometimes people will look at you like you’re insane. Sometimes people will make you feel like a fool for thinking you can accomplish certain things, but I’ve never given anyone the power to take away what I BELIEVE AND I’M SURE I can accomplish. When you give others power over yourself is when you lose.

I’ve learned the most important thing on top of risk, consistency, and working hard, is BELIEVING IN YOURSELF. BEING YOUR BIGGEST FAN. If you’re not 10000000% confident and sure of yourself in this life, things will be 10x harder. I believe in myself down to the T because there’s nothing else in this life I rather be doing than chasing my dreams. I want to be a success story that changes other peoples lives. I want to be somebody that one day a young girl will look up at and believe in herself because of my story and how I got here. Nothing was handed to me, I didn’t come from money, I’m the first born American out of every single generation of my blood-line. I was put on this Earth to make a great change and I’m sure of it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When a friend comes into town, I have my usual go-to spots in the city that I know will never miss!

One of my favorite local cafe spots for a great tasting meal & wonderful ambiance would be Three House; owned by a good friend of mine, Sam LeBlanc, not only does he co-own Three House but is also owner of the skate brand Half-Evil. Def recommend checking out if you like chill brunch spots with amazing food.

After a nice, chill brunch at Three House, I’d recommend staying in the neighborhood of Wicker Park (just a few minutes away from where Three House is located), and doing some shopping! One of my favorite shops with super dope clothes, kicks, & accessories, would forsure be Boneyard. (Stop in & tell em King Inesse sent ya!) There’s plenty of other dope shops within the radius such as Fat Tiger Workshop owned by JoeFreshGoods, Saint Alfred, Round-Two & amazing restaurants all up & down the strip of Milwaukee.

After a day of shopping, for the music lovers there’s always so many great spots to chill and grab drinks such as Sub-T & DSTRK. (If you’re a wing-lover, DSTRK is famous for their wings!) Personally, one of my favorites.

Being from Chicago, I love the Logan Square-Wicker Park area as it’s super laid back & very artistic vs. if you’re looking for something more upscale & fancy….head down to River North!

River North is one of my favorite neighborhoods to DJ at, however it’s ALWAYS packed so be ready for a wait wherever you go & don’t forget to make reservations if you’re going out to dinner. I always recommend visiting Chicago hot-spots such as Joy District, TAO, & Cerise Rooftop at Virgin Hotels if you’re looking for a nice spot with good food & music!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I first started DJ’ing, I wanted to jump right into the big stuff. I wanted to be in front of big crowds, do sold out events, I was ready. But I knew it wasn’t that easy, not only would I have to keep practicing but I’d have to prove I was capable of it. I also realized how male dominated the music industry was even more. All the concerts/parties/clubs I’d ever been to only ever had male DJ’s. So now I felt like that was another stigma I was going to have to break through and really show that I’m made for this.

The first event I ever put together was called “GRLZ WKND” meant to highlight and empower women. I wanted to show that women could put on a hell of a show and bring out a crowd without a single male on the lineup. I also wanted a big headliner to prove to MYSELF, I was capable of executing something I’ve only ever dreamed of. I hit up a female artist that I knew personally who I admired and loved so much named Tay Money. She was with it all! I knew I was going to need the help of a team, I mean I had literally never threw a concert together. That’s when I reached out to Berto Solorio of SPKRBX (Chicago Based Event Curation Team). Berto believed in my vision, he saw the hunger I had for this in my eyes and extended his full help to me. I’m so thankful for Berto taking that chance in me, he’s someone that’s truly believed in me since day 1 without anything backing me.

Another notable person I really would like to give recognition to in my story is William Martinez of V5 Group (Chicago Based Event & Marketing Team). I approached Will back in late 2020 and introduced myself since I knew of him through mutual friends. I remember telling him I hope we can work together one day in the future. Him & his team were responsible for many successful events in Chicago and have a huge role in Chicago Nightlife. I knew I would be exposed to something different and much bigger if I worked with him. I wanted the opportunity to show my talent to a wider audience. Will took a chance and booked me a week later after we talked. Mind you, I had NEVER DJ’d at a club before. And if you know Chicago nightlife, it is very rare that promoters/clubs take chances on newbie DJ’s with little to no club experience. Once Will booked me, he saw the passion I had for the music, the crowd, the LIFESTYLE. My life changed completely once I went down this path with Will, he put me in positions that made me grow and succeed more & more every time. As time went on other clubs/promotion groups/DJ’s started taking me so much more seriously and I had gained a respect that I was working so hard for. I’m incredibly thankful for the platform Will gave me to showcase my talents.
