Hi Kiydrah, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” by Maya Angelou. This quote really drives and reminds me to be mindful of how I treat others. Through my music and brand Awkward Society, I always try to create an experience that will leave my supporters feeling good, positive, and inspired about their lives or situation.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is nothing came easy or overnight. I would also like the world to know that my sound and style is different and outside of the box. I’ve always loved singing, dancing, and coming up with my own words to beats since I was a little girl firstly introduced to the sounds of late 80’s/early 90’s R&B & soul in the back of my moms Camry. One of my main influences in music is Missy Elliott, I love how she dared to be different from her sound, to her clothes, to even remaining humble as an artist and making her main mission in music to create timeless music that inspires and uplifts others. I always knew one day I’d use the gifts God gave me to uplift and inspire others to be free to be who they want to be. I began taking music seriously in 2014 when I started writing full songs and would go on to begin recording professionally in 2016 on a home studio setup I purchased with a Guitar Center gift card my father gifted me. To this day I still record in my bedroom and self taught myself how to mix in various DAWS. I’m not the best at mixing, but I know with more practice and more creating outside the box I will learn to master the sound that’s best for me. The best was to overcome is to keep going, keep putting in work, and to trust the process. If I can do it, anyone can. Don’t be afraid to go after your dreams and passions, they’re already inside of you waiting to come out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I come from a small town in Texas so for my friend to thoroughly enjoy their self we would have to split their time to visiting the next major city, Austin. Staying local in Killeen I’d have to show them my secret spot to overlook the city. There are a lot of nice hiking spots here and of course food places. Some of my favorites are Hot Spot Grill ( a puerto rican food truck), Simply Good Burgers, Texas Roadhouse, and Italianos in Temple (The best pizza). There’s an event on Killeen called The Plug that showcases local talent and businesses I’d have to bring my friend to. An experience that truly leaves everyone motivated and inspired to keep creating.
Traveling to Austin I would have to show them the histrionic 5th & 6th street for a night out with good live music and bars. For anything fun we’d have to go to one of my favorite entertainment spots Top Golf or Dave and Busters. Of course we’d have to visit some of the amazing food trucks for street tacos.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest shoutout would have to go to my family. They encourage and support all of my endeavors since they were ideas brewing in my mind. They’re the reason I’m doing music. I remember showing my mom and brother a demo I created on my moms iPad to a beat I found on youtube one day and they said “Kiydrah, YOU HAVE TO PUT THIS OUT FOR THE WORLD TO HEAR IT!”. That song turned out to be my first single “Really Love” produced by Marc D and would go on to open many doors for me musically. I’m forever grateful for my family and my supporters that keep me encouraged and motivated throughout my music journey.
