We had the good fortune of connecting with lee nicholson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi lee, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Being a small business owner the biggest factor in my success is doing what I love and believe in. Supporting and expanding the reach of US tile artisans. Setting us apart from the one-stop-shop that offers everything I wanted to focus on the handmade, unique and truly beautiful tile that is being made in the US.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The studio focuses on handmade custom tiles from the US. This has always excited me for several reasons. I believe in supporting companies here in the US that are making a difference as well as something beautiful that will last a life time. Being a part of people’s homes, how if feels to them each day is an honor we do not take lightly.
Staying the course amid all the imported materials has been tough when the only focus is on price. Staying with our brand and why I opened has been a slower growth curve but more rewarding. Yes, I could see commodity tile all day long with no real joy in the creative process but it is more than money. It is about creating something that the client will love.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Tough question! Depends on where they are visiting from. I would say most likely a drive along the PCH to see the grand beauty that is our SoCal coast. Malibu is truly stunning. Day trip to Ojai for a stroll along the avenue and a more small town feel. Not to forget a drive to Palos Verdes. A walk along the cliff edge is soul enhancing.
Food is not to be missed and LA has wonderful options.
Historic for it’s ambience Musso & Frank’s is a must. Tacos at an original joint in Manhattan Beach, El Tarasco.
Jumping vibe for design and eats in WeHo, Gracias Madre.
Drive down Sunset Blvd and Hollywood Blvd to take in a bit of the architecture and “LA feel”
Hollywood Bowl would be a dream if the right concert. Nothing like a night under the stars listening to great music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Could not have started nor gotten this far without the support of the tile makers. They believed in me and continue to support my success.
