Meet Kristel Brinshot | Artist | Creative Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristel Brinshot and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristel, how do you think about risk?
High risk, High reward, no risk no reward is pretty much my mantra although my version of risk might be different from someone else’s. I tend to be a calculated risk taker. If it doesn’t make me pee my pants I’m not thinking big enough, and if it makes me feel like I’m compromising who I am it’s not worth a drop of my energy.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One year, just as I was about to launch my 3rd business, an educational company with gorgeous marketing graphics, a sponsorship, and even money backing me (finally), I lost everything. The night before our launch I ended up in a hospital bed. I had suffered hardcore burnout. After months of no sleep, terrible diet, and non-stop everything my body threw in the towel—I couldn’t even open my eyes. My brain as the doctor described it had a lightning storm and I had no choice but to stop looking for answers and instead, look inward. Failure hurts—our lizard brains are wired to avoid it as I later learned. But you know what hurts even more? Sacrificing so much of yourself, your identity, your joy so much so that you don’t know who you really are anymore. The way we work doesn’t just affect the way we get a paycheck, it affects our relationships, our environment, and our mental health. And so as a recovered and reflected on this, Big World NRG Coaching was born.
One of the biggest lessons I teach is that we are more than just production, or DEI hires, or any title a company gives us these days, we are beautifully complex beings who sometimes need permission to do nothing. And let me tell you “doing nothing” is a foreign concept especially to children of immigrants, it’s almost blasphemous.
I have always been in the business of “weird”. Weird was my brand, what companies called my work, or described my style as…and that’s totally cool! BUT-what it actually IS- is ᴀᴜᴛʜᴇɴᴛɪᴄ. It’s from the honest perspective of an indigenous Latinx woman who had had to fight really hard to get a seat at the table, and while grateful for the experience, definitely on her way to build a new one. I think that’s what sets Big World NRG apart from other coaching programs- the focus is on building a sustainable creative lifestyle that supports the most authentic version of yourself.
BIPOC people are the fabric of innovation. Some of us have immigrated from other countries, survived poverty, microaggressions, war of every kind. While these stories might sound “weird” to the status quo, it’s the kind of stuff that inspires the world to do BETTER. Creatives are people who are gifted with a vision for the world, and our mission is to bring that vision to life. It won’t happen if we deny ourselves our fullest expression. So that’s what I hope to do- to help my community find the courage to do just that.
That’s BIG WORLD NRG.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a socal kid I’ve always found the best places and experiences happen when you eat a good breakfast, a strong coffee and just be prepared to get lost and talk to strangers. LA is magical when you let yourself be open to random experiences so I don’t plan too much. Luckily my bestie (who is also a hardworking WOC biz owner) is actually on her way to hang out next weekend , so on the itinerary are just a sprinkle of things that scream self-care: Start our morning with some chisme and matcha at rykn DTLA, hang out in my old hood Eagle Rock, visiting friends, catching dinner at Chifa , Karaoke in Koreatown along with some late night street tacos and a Wispa session hours before I send her back on the plane. LA can be an overwhelming city so I’d spend time being well-fed and relaxed!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shout out my sister Priscilla Brinshot who has been my ride or die, my mirror, and my comedic relief all throughout this process, could not have done it without you!
