We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk, to me, is making decisions where the outcome is unknown, but with a belief that the end result will ultimately be more beneficial than not. It has played a huge part in my career, particularly in the last few years. I spent 13 years writing insurance policy language in Missouri before I took the leap in 2019 to follow my dreams in moving to California to learn makeup and work in the film industry. Without taking that risk, my life would look very different right now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I graduated from Cinema Makeup School at the end of 2019 and have been working primarily in film ever since. Trying to break into a new industry, particularly in entertainment, is difficult. I spent the first year or so taking any opportunity that came my way in order to build connections and relationships, as well as build my own knowledge as to how sets work. Because of that, I’ve been able to move to bigger projects and roles, including working as a Makeup Department Head or Key MUA.

I love the character creation process. Whether it’s a dramatic look, or an everyday look, my goal is to make each character feel like a real person in the world of the film, and contribute to the actor’s work in portraying that character.

I’ve learned that adaptability is key in this industry. Scripts change, timelines change, and it’s important to be able to roll with it and come prepared for anything.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are a ton of museums that are fun to visit, like LACMA and the Academy Museum. I always recommend Koreatown to find amazing food, but food trucks are also great to try. And, of course, there are the beaches. You can’t come to LA and not spend a day (or several) hanging out by the ocean.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family and best friend have been nothing but encouraging as I started a completely new career path. Other MUAs I’ve had the privilege to work with (too many to name, but a special shoutout to Monique Lucero) have also been instrumental in helping me develop as an artist.
