We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, what matters most to you?
I value truth most of all. Which to me, is sort of revolutionary being that mainstream media has grown to be duplicitous and candidly, over-saturated with fake. The truth is hard to come by. It’s become rare.
The truth is what fuels me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be great. Even as a young child, I remember writing lists and making plans, all centered on impact. I had this innate desire to change the world. When I was 8-years-old, my sister and I created a manifesto of sorts called “The Have it All Plan.” It was basically a plan to make our dreams come true. Granted, there were a couple obvious roadblocks from A to Z. Aside from our adolescence, we were broke. Our Mom was single, schizophrenic and barely around. There was abuse, roaches, and panhandling for quarters to spend on dinner at the Donut Shop.
Some might say, the odds were against us… but we didn’t see it that way. In our minds, we were going to be great.

I love the Scripture Genesis 16:13 that says “You are the God who sees me…” because now looking back, it was only God that could help me rise above my adversity to eventually become a scholarship athlete and then successful news anchor in Phoenix, Miami, and eventually the entertainment mecca of Los Angeles, California.

There are many chapters in my story, but the common thread of divine intervention is what I’m most excited to share with the world. I hope you’ll journey with me through seasons of heartbreak, healing, marriage, parenthood, and good old fashioned humanity in the second season of my faith based visual podcast, “Go Sis!” launching February 29th.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the places in LA that have a total vibe. I’m a sucker for family owned, mom & pop spots; places where you can taste the love in the food! Thankfully, LA has plenty. During a week long trip, I would recommend the Mount Hollywood hike at Griffith Park to overlook the beautiful city of Los Angeles. Catch a sunset at NoBu in Malibu… take a trip to Santa Monica, where you’d have to eat the most delicious Caribbean food at my favorite spot, Cha Cha Chicken (I recommend the coconut fried chicken with jerk sauce)… then walk a few steps to “people watch” at the Santa Monica Pier. Perhaps rent a bike on the beach and peddle down to Venice.
I’m obsessed with a couple Burbank coffee shops, Basecamp High Horse Dinette, and Dad’s Donuts — but make sure you make conversation, because they’ve been in business forever and have the best stories. Also, a weekend brunch at Castaway is critical. The views are breathtaking! The food is delicious… and the ambience is grown and trendy. One more coffee spot — you have to check out Aroma Cafe in Studio City, every beverage is made with love. And Disneyland gets more magical every time. I could go on forever.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Throughout my life there have been MANY who have contributed to my success; mentors, bosses, managers, peers, my incredible family, my church, and even complete strangers who chose to offer random acts of kindness! For each helping hand and opened door, I am immensely grateful. That being said, the real MVP in this season of my life is definitely Jesus.
During the times when I’ve been exhausted and in my deepest times of grief, his chivalry and unwavering love has given me resilience and strength to do the hard things.
It’s those quiet times with Him that have defined who I really am today.
