We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristoffer Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristoffer, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Early on I discovered I had an affinity for making things and as a child of the 80’s I developed a love of movies as well. I think I’m lucky in that I found my passion and decided to pursue a career in filmmaking when I was young. I say that because it took me a long time to get to where I am, but also because there’s so much to learn. I’ve never been interested in a “traditional” job so-to-speak, and I think Cinematography is the most exciting and creatively fulfilling job for me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love making images. I love capturing moments. I love when an image tells a story without words. I love making movies and part of the fun of it all is that everything we do is pretend, and made-up and make believe. To be able to call that your profession is special I think.
I love walking onto a set and blocking a scene, and lighting it for the specific time of day and mood and then carefully shooting each set-up until the director has the pieces to craft it into a story about people that you believe are real. I think it’s so much fun and so fulfilling and I feel lucky that I’ve been able to travel the world and feed my family doing just this.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You can do a lot in a week here in LA, I think I would divide it up into regions, maybe something like this:
Mon-Tues: Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu. Beach during the day, 3rd street for shopping, plenty of places to eat
Wed-Thurs-Fri: Los Feliz, Silverlake, DTLA. Griffith park, Sunset Blvd in Silverlake, Downtown barhopping and speakeasies
Sat- Sun: Palm Springs or Joshua Tree depending on the friend’s vibe. Swimming Pool and drinks. Casino, Outlet mall, optional.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m dedicating my shoutout to my father, Ronald Carrillo. Rest in peace, I love you.
