We had the good fortune of connecting with Kym Gold and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kym, what do you attribute your success to?
Perseverance, dedication and passion are huge parts of my business success. Making the constant choice to keep going and giving it my all even when there are challenges has been key for me on this journey. The other side of that is passion. Without passion, making that daily choice to keep going would be much harder. Passion fuels me.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is called Style Union Home, a luxury ceramic brand – or as I like to call it, fashion for the home. Being in the fashion industry for over 30 years, I found that when I started Style Union Home it was the same thing as clothing, it just happens to be ceramics. I started Style Union Home in the beginning of the pandemic, which had so many challenges on its own. The company has grown so much since we started. It’s incredible. I’m grateful.
My story as a woman in the workplace has been very challenging. At True Religion Jeans, being a woman in an all-male board of directors was really difficult. To take the negative comments on the daily, being the biggest shareholder of the company, really took its toll on me. The lesson learned there was to be true to yourself and knowing to have the confidence of moving forward, no matter what anyone says. It was with the perseverance that I was able to move forward and be where I am today.
Advice I would give to future entrepreneurs is that passion is the first thing you need to have when starting a brand. If you don’t have passion then there’s no point in doing things. Building a brand is one of the most difficult, arduous and pain-staking processes. When you’re starting a brand from scratch, you have to believe in yourself. Then, you have to build your team – which is one of the most important parts of your business. I always say “you’re only as good as your team,” so it’s very important to me that I am surrounded by people who understand my vision, have passion for the work and are respectful to one another. It is because of my solid team that we are where we are today at Style Union Home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting my area, I would take them to the Row and Soho House! The arts district in DTLA is up and coming and so fantastic. There are lots of cool shops to visit and places to eat there. Before the pandemic I used to go to the Korean bath spas once a month in Koreatown, so I’d take them there too of course. I also love the Sunset area, which is where Remedy Place is. I would come here for the infrared spas and lymphatic drainage massages. In the west side, I would visit Shoppe Amber and Shop Coop – two beautiful stores that have the most amazing interior décor. Lastly, I would stop by the Bead Lounge in Woodland Hills. My good friend Bari owns the store and she has the most incredible selection of jewelry and beads. If you know me, you know I love my accessories!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate this to my mom, because to raise 5 children (basically by herself) is probably one of the hardest things anyone can do. I am who I am today because of my mom’s love and support. She would constantly tell me that I can do and be whoever I want to be, and I stayed true to that.
