We had the good fortune of connecting with Lakesha Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lakesha, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from my family. I have strong support starting with my husband. My husband has supported and encouraged me to keep going and striving to success even when the sales are down. He reminds that the reason why I do this is to create a legacy for our family and ensure that our family is setup to maintain generational wealth going forward. My kids are always supporting me. They are always willing to help me make the candles, make the labels, sample fragrances, ship the products and even help with selling the candles at local farmer’s market and swapmeets. It brings a level of satisfaction and confidence when they google candles and see that my website is there and their faces light up with joy knowing that I am putting everything I have into this business to ensure that it is successful for them.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business was created with the foundation of my family. The name Sinai is actually my niece’s middle name. I have always loved candles and had way too many to count when I was younger. One day I decided to turn my love for candles into my business. I worked in health care for 15 years and I absolutely loved what I did. The connection you make with patients on a daily basis is the greatest satisfaction. I started to think how can my love for candles and making candles give me the same satisfaction as health care. With both I discovered you still cater to the patient or now I say customer and offer them a wellness break by being able to light up a candle and bring serenity through a flame. The coconut wax (90%), soy (5%), palm (5%) blend I think sets me apart from every other candle business. There are not very many candle businesses that use coconut wax due to the price. I do it because I want my customer to experience the fragrance of the candle, the clean burn of the candle and the longer burn of the candle. It took a lot of research and sampling to find the right blend of wax that was satisfying to me. There were late nights and early mornings with making the candles, burning the candles to ensure the fragrance would come through, researching fragrance companies, researching wax companies, researching how to create my own labels and most of all being able to find the right jar for my candles. It was not an easy journey but it definitely was well worth every late night when a customer gives me feedback especially positive feedback about the candle I created for them. The biggest challenge was shipping during the summer season. I had read articles and listened to YouTube videos about others who were having the same challenge but was able to overcome by shipping during certain timeframes throughout the week. I’ve learned to listen to your customer and if they have a question do your best to answer it, if it happens to be a question that they should not have to ask make sure to make the necessary changes to your website, I definitely learned that along the way as well. I want the world to know that you can achieve that serenity, that peace through a flame and not have to worry about what type of chemicals are being burned and are they harmful to you and your family.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for the week I would definitely take a trip to Palm Springs. Palm Springs have delicious and different variety of foods to enjoy as well as a nightlife. The next place would definitely be Farmer’s Market in Riverside, which offers a variety of foods and products that in return support small businesses. To finish out the week it would definitely be in San Diego at the beach and Los Angeles at Venice Beach. Both large cities offer the nightlife and food that most are looking to enjoy as well as site seeing. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
