We had the good fortune of connecting with LaKeysha Jean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaKeysha, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks are necessary for pivotal movement towards purpose and destiny. Many of the circumstances I’ve faced in my life have forced bravery and built defiance against the fear of taking risks. I’ve taken them with confidence and I’ve taken them afraid— either way I take them. My grandmother taught me the power of faith. She raised me to believe I could thrive in uncharted territory if I believed. Couple nurture with my adventurous personality and you get some pretty interesting stories about my life experiences thus far. I’m currently undertaking my biggest risk to date having left the comforts of tenured employment to become an entrepreneur.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’d love to… I create products that allow communities of color to speak to the Kings in their lives – fathers, husbands, brothers, partners, sons –  with words that validate their worth and magnify their masculinity. I am the founder and CEO of Speak To The King, LLC – a luxury greeting card brand dedicated to celebrating the existence of men of color.  Speak To The King is different because of the niche population we serve. We are an answer to a void of love and appreciation for black and brown men in our country. I am excited to contribute to a shift towards celebratory narratives about the value of men of color to communities and families. My passion to launch Speak The King came about during the quarantine of 2020 where I became intentional about growth and healing in all areas of my life, specifically my relationship with my father. I was knee deep in my process when we as a nation saw the death of Mr. George Floyd. My heart broke all the more at the thought of my own father experiencing such fate without him feeling my forgiveness or the love he deserves as a human being, let alone a Black man. Essentially Speak To The King’s message of love began there. I retired from a 20 year career of assisting with people with disabilities to launch www.speaktotheking.com in January 2021 along with my ecommerce site on Etsy.com – search Speak To The King.  I’ve learned quickly that entrepreneurship is a game of mental stamina to believe against all odds in your why. My why is my purpose for living – to create products and spaces where love and appreciation leave a permanent imprint on the hearts of black and brown men all over the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
While I am not native to Philadelphia, I’ve lived here long enough to create a pretty dope agenda if my best friends were coming to town. I’d start with a historical tour of the culturally rich neighborhoods, then a visit to Dalessandro’s Cheesesteaks, photo opts at LOVE Park and City Hall (shot from Broad Street), and a champion’s run up the steps of the Art Institute – Rocky-style. No trip is complete without shopping, so without question, I would take them to my happiest place – King of Prussia mall!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is dedicated to my grandmother and all the praying men & women God has assigned to my 40 years of life thus far. I am surrounded by love and a tribe of warriors! I am grateful.
