We had the good fortune of connecting with Lam Poon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lam, what makes you happy? Why?

For me, making art is what makes me happy. Personally, I find art interesting and enjoyable because it is a form of expression, and each work is filled with the creator’s desire for expression. Art is a driving force in my life because I think that as long as I still have the desire to express myself, and I still want to tell my story and what I want to express through my artwork, then I am a person who loves my life and my life is colorful. Likewise, other people’s creations are also one of the driving forces behind my passion and creativity. The different perspectives and angles from which people describe their own stories and the world they see also enrich my vision.

In this complex, busy society where we all live under certain pressure, it is precious to have the desire and determination to express oneself. Creating art makes me walk outside of my room and see the world, and observe life. Discover small details and surprises in daily life and appreciate the present moment. More importantly, to be optimistic about life’s negative emotions and stress.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I was a child, I have had a strong interest and passion for creating art. My father is a very interesting, talented, and open-minded person who shared with me all kinds of movies, documentaries, and music from a young age. He is the reason why I want to pursue an art career. I was not a quiet child, I was curious about everything and had a great desire to express myself. Drawing became a unique outlet for me to express myself and express my emotions. I grew up in an environment where art is not a popular career to do, and where parents were more likely to want their children to have more stable jobs. I grew up as an outlier among my peers and always wanted to find a place where I could create freely and meet like-minded people. It wasn’t easy for me to come to LA to continue my art career. Before art school, I had to learn to draw from online artist communities and YouTube. I’m glad I persevered and made it this far, but it’s not the end. Since this is one of the rare things I love and can do well, I will continue on this path.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will love to take my friends to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. I can sit there all that just to look and sketch down the different species of animal specimens and skeletons. I will also bring my friends to visit South Pasadena and China Town because there are a lot of interesting stores that sells vintage collections of all kinds of things. It’s always an inspiration to me to walk around and discover these awesome stores, and I believe my friends will love them as well. In addition to these, Los Angeles itself is a place with great weather, so even if we drive aimlessly, we will find many new and exciting places.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to my parents for supporting me in what I am passionate about and to my friends who have offered me help and encouragement. I came to Los Angeles alone, knowing nothing about this new environment. Without their support, I don’t think I would be as happy as I am today with my education and starting my art career. I am also grateful to the organizations and seniors in the entertainment art industry who have shared their educational resources and experiences openly and transparently, such as Asians in Animation – AnimAsians, Open Animation, BaM Animation, and Aaron Blaise. It’s so kind for them to let us get access to those resources and I believe they have helped not only me but also many others who carry dreams and are passionate about art. I’m especially thankful to my friends and classmates at ArtCenter who help me with my improvement in the art.
