We had the good fortune of connecting with Lana Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lana, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Don’t forget to look up.” My dad has given me this loving reminder countless times through my life. In both the radiant and the dim moments, it helps me re-center and surrender whatever I’m carrying to God who’s much bigger than any fleeting situation or circumstance. It makes me feel safe. I remember that I’m a small, yet powerful, part of a much larger story being written and it’s then, when I think of the grand scheme of things, that the mark I hope to leave behind becomes clear again.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Having just been on The Voice, I love sharing that it was my sixth audition that finally landed me on the show. I kept at it, noticing that each time I progressed further in the audition process to the point where producers were inviting me to return and try out. My answer stayed, “yes”! I’ve chosen to treat my ‘almosts’ as ’successes’ because an almost means something… It ain’t nothing, that’s for sure! Everyone starts somewhere, so I think perseverance and a strong sense of identity goes a long way and has been key to getting me where I am. That, and faith.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s see… LA is FULL of treasures and that’s what’s been so fun about my time living here. Some favorite spots of mine… As far as cafes: Aroma (Coffee & Tea) in Studio City makes for a great social hang for brunch and Jameson Brown Coffee Roasters in Pasadena is a dear spot where I’ve sat and enjoyed good amount of morning solo writing and reading. As far as parks: Echo Park Lake is wonderful for picnics and I like the spunky shops surrounding it, too! Good Times at Davey Wayne’s is one of my favorite bars for a night scene… it’s got a fun 70’s retro feel and usually has live music! Finally, I highly recommend hiking the Hollywood Sign. It’s a challenging hike and so worth it when you reach the top!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandma, Lana. We were really close and she was a constant source of encouragement and wisdom to me. Our name means “light in the darkness” and that’s what she still is to me any time I need it. Living in her afterglow, the life and belief she spoke over me and my music remains present. Words are powerful; they linger even after people leave us. Because I recognize this, I try to treat my songwriting like a conversation: “What am I truly saying? What do I want to leave behind?”
