We had the good fortune of connecting with Lance Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lance, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The most difficult decision i’ve ever had to make was walking away/retiring from a federal government position, that i loved, making good money, to pursue a career in music. I was making around 80-90k a year traveling the country and helping communities recover after presidential sized natural disasters with FEMA) and when music started really pulling at my heartstrings, I chose to walk away from the government work and go 100% into music. That lead to me going 3 years without a paycheck for better or worse and experiencing debt for the first time in my life but looking back now I would do it all over again because I love how things have turned out and continue to grow.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Today I am a platinum selling #1 songwriter and former Showdog Nashville recording artist (Toby Keith’s Label) who has made a living as a professional songwriter and recording artist since 2012. I have written over 1500 songs, had over 50 recorded by independent and major artists, I’ve performed in front of thousands of people and seen my songs cause people to dance, laugh, cry, remember, forget, enjoy life to the fullest, even save a life. I write songs about life, make it rhyme, and put it to music in hopes to connect to thousands of listeners, or the specific 1 that a song was meant to find. I’ve been faced with so many “no’s” in my career i could paint a house with them all, I’ve had failure after failure after failure and many of those 1500 songs aren’t worth the paper they’re written on, but those got me to the next one and are why i’ve enjoyed success. Lastly, the people i’ve met through music is where the true riches of the business flows. Take away my publishing deals, gold, and platinum records, #1 songs and awards, record deal, etc….i’d be fine…but take away the people that are in my life because of music and i’d be a hollow man. I’ve learned to be patient, persistent, and grow alligator skin, that having 3-4 good friends is worth 10 times more than 100 buddies, and that doing the right thing and being a good person will get you far in life. I read a book called the Go-Giver that really taught me what giving and receiving was all about too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Grand Ole Opry would be stop #1 followed by The LIstening Room Cafe, and the Bluebird Cafe….we’d drive past broadway but not stop, it’s for tourists. I’d grab a drink at Red Door or Live Oak, Spend some time soaking up the history in the country music hall of fame, grab some food at Cinco De Mayo, Cafe Santa Fe, or The Pharmacy, coffee at Fidos. We would tour music row and i’d explain where some of their favorite songs were written and recorded and maybe end the night back at the house enjoying a Jack and coke to wind down.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
NSAI is the organization that gave me my start in songwriting and networking with the music industry in Nashville. That would be the Nashville Songwriters Association International headed by Director Bart Herbison. The staff there, past and present throughout my time here in Nashville have been like a family and I don’t know where i’d be without them.
