We had the good fortune of connecting with Laniea Dominguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laniea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The reason I started Comedy for Causes was to combine my passion of performing stand up comedy with my purpose of giving back to others. I had a rough start as a child but came out with a much better life than what I’m from. To express my gratitude , I want to spend the rest of my life giving back.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art form is communication and authenticity! Throughout most of my corporate life, I’ve been an advertising sales executive and there is certainly an art form in this industry. You want your clients to trust you, understand you, and help them paint a picture of a successful advertising campaign. I have since taken that art form to the next level by performing stand up comedy. This is very similar to advertising in that the audience wants to believe you, understand you and ultimately see the picture your painting for them. Something that sets me apart from others is my authenticity. You will always know my intentions and where they’re coming from. I really enjoy making others feel important and special. I have a tattoo on my arm that reads “it’s not about me”, and that’s how I try to live my life. None of my career choices have been easy but then again, that’s why I love all of the things I’ve done and do. The rewards are much sweeter! What I would like to communicate to the world about my story is that we aren’t what we’re from, unless we choose to be. And what I would love to communicate about my brand with Comedy for Causes couldn’t have been better than by Muhammad Ali himself “The Service you do for others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” ― Muhammad Ali

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love love love southern California! Especially being from Idaho, I feel as though I’m always on a vacation. One of my favorite places to visit is Venice Beach! It’s filled with people from all walks of life and most of them are down to earth straight out cool people! You won’t find a lot of pretentious folk at Venice Beach. My favorite restaurant would have to be Lala‘s Argentine Grill on Melrose Avenue. The food is incredible and the ambience it’s almost just as good! But if I’m looking for a good breakfast, The Pantry Café on Figueroa in Los Angeles is a cant miss!! Another great place to get a bite to eat and enjoy a few drinks is the Boathouse in Long Beach. It overlooks the water, usually has live music, and just sets the mood for a perfect night! Another place I like to go to is the Museum of Tolerance. I enjoy learning things and you certainly learned a lot here. It also helps you appreciate what you have by learning about what others didn’t.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people and even a few TV shows I would love to give a shout out to for inspiring me. On a closer level, Claudia Weathermon Testor is a woman that has made a huge impact in my life. When I was 19 years old, I had 2 small children, was attending a teen parent high school and working part time as a production assistant for ABC News in Nampa, ID. Claudia was one of the news anchors there and I always looked up to her. She was a single woman with a solid career, a nice car, and was buying her own home. That was unheard of in my upbringing. She treated me like a person versus what society would’ve viewed me as. Once she even took me to her house! The reason this stands out is because she trusted me and had she known what I was from, she may not have. She even attended my high school graduation! To this day, we are still friends and she goes to my comedy shows when I’m in town. Then on the celebrity level I can’t help but say thank you to Oprah Winfrey! She showed me that you can be successful regardless of where you are from. The last shout out goes to the Cosby show for showing me there can be a successful mother and father in the home that doesn’t fight, do drugs or go to jail. Good thing I didn’t know what Bill was doing on his off time.
