We had the good fortune of connecting with Larry Traevon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Larry, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I love this question! Mostly because I strongly feel as though this is something MANY creatives deal with in many different facets of our community. But for me it’s simply put… if when you wake up every morning, go to bed each night, & find in the pattern of your days, you can’t help but to think about what you LOVE.. that’s how you know to keep going… listen to YOU tell YOU that YOU got this and whatever it is that brings you happiness… LET IT! so can EFFORTLESSLY spread that joy! Faith over fear always! 🏽️
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art has two sides, one side is makeup artistry/creative direction. My dedication to sharing the importance of how beauty is not only captivating to look at, but impactful to feel, is what drives the enhancement of my skills and allows my transitions between genres to be… Effortless. I’ve shared amazing experiences with clients such as Ariana Debose, Netflix, Elle, RuPaul’s Drage Race Season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall, Forty Five Ten, Suzy Batiz, Attitude Magazine, NYFW, HGTV, VH1, Hulu, The Bachelorette’s Rachel Lindsay, OWN, Shekinah Jo, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, D Magazine, & Apple Music. I’m really not a niche artist when it comes to makeup artistry, I strongly appreciate a clean beauty moment, a glamour moment and definitely creative makeup moments as well! My “category” if I were to have one would be RANGE! And my work in the creative direction department reflects that very MOOD as well. My work has ranged from providing on location private makeup, to red carpet events such as the Golden Globes, the Grammys & the emmys, backstage artistry for NYFW, to roles as key artist for independent fashion shows, editorial shoots, film/television, as well as creative direction for fashion editorials and indi brands. The other side of my art is my Drag Queen alter ego. Her IG is @princesskingsize (shameless plug) lol!! Drag initiated my creative journey and it’s definitely a passionate piece to the puzzle. From the essence of a mood down to the details of the aesthetic to the voice and tone of the message, drag collectively produces an extension to my confidence and a private mental studio for my overall creativity. Being of color, born in the late … I won’t say my age lmao!! And from Texas, this journey HAS DEFINITELY not been easy!! Each phase had unnecessary complications, whether it was because my drag demeaned the expectation of my talents else where, the fact I’m of color, and/or the fact that even outside of my drag I typically exude a gender fluid aesthetic. There were MANY times where my energy alone shook the room….. All this to say I quickly -ish started to process that my different, my ability to “shake,” was my superpower and that I could either conform and disappoint MYSELF or I could take the road less traveled and be proud of the story behind me and stories ahead. I would want everyone to remember this, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proberbs 4:23
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmmm….I would say I love the Cravin Crab Cakes food truck typically parked in studio city you can check her IG out it’s @cravincrabcakes for location and menu updates! Black owned food excellence!! But to be honest, I have many introverted ways outside my career and creative interests. So… we can definitely stop by Herbarium or Calma (I love them both), in West Hollywood, stop by Ralph’s, I’ll cook, we can elevate 🤣, then I’ll take you on a hike. Next morning we are hitting the fashion district to shop small and appreciate small businesses. Next, we are shooting concepts all day with multiple talent & like minded, like hearted creatives. And we will enjoy everything FEELING and LOOKING beautiful! We’ll end it with a chill beach day, but will probably get some good yoga in with some lavender sage & crystal goodness at our sides.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out to my mom, Queen Melissa!! Haha!! My little sister, Nasaysha!! My beautiful Grandma Ruth!! My piece of happiness, EJ Gregory my close friends and family back home in Dallas, my intimate group of loved ones here in LA, and the iconic Reggie Wells for always keeping a light in front of me in the most random needed moments ️
