We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Graham Garrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
There is no option on giving up if you’re doing what you love. It would be like giving up on yourself. I think if you asked me this at 25 years old I’d say the same thing but with more of a do or die mentality. It’s changed a little now at 41. I think when I was younger I was motivated by the glory. Trying to get famous or something, wanting to win an Oscar. Now that I’m older I just am content to be practicing my craft and happy that some people enjoy my work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a writer and filmmaker. I’m not sure what sets me apart from others, but I always try and do everything from the heart and with truth. Especially in my writing. People seem to really resonate with vulnerability and it took me a long time to let go and just write exactly what I was feeling. But that’s when the stories get good. And with directing I just kept filming, kept editing and worked on many projects for free until I started to get paid. If its something you’re interested in, it’s worth it. Just don’t work for companies with budgets for free. Know your worth. I guess I’d want the world to know that I love them and can’t wait to help tell their story.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok, So I’m a bit of a Rock n Roller. So I’d send them on my Rock n Roll Tour. You start at Canters Deli, have some all day breakfast or lunch. Walk over to the adjoining bar, The Kibitz room for a drink after that. Then make your way to the Sunset Strip. Hit up The Rainbow Room, The Whiskey a Go Go and The Viper Room for a band. Tacos Delta in Sunset Junction the next day for hangover chilaquiles. The last bookstore downtown for some inspiration. And then Yang Chow for some slippery shrimp.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many supportive people in my life, my parents, my husband. But I think the person who keeps me going creatively daily is my friend Jill Killington. She’s a writer and director too and its nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of, and talk about the ups and downs of trying to make it in Hollywood that I can relate with. Not to mention watch Lost Boys with for the 10,000th time. She’s a successful Hollywood writer and my proof that if you work hard good things will come.
