We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Park and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I always thought I would become a teacher. I applied to colleges as an education major, graduated with an education major, and was set to attend grad school after my undergrad to get my Masters in teaching. I always loved fashion, beauty, and modeling, but I never had the confidence to actually pursue it. I would tell myself that everyone has a career that they don’t 100% love and maybe teaching was the best, stable thing to do for my future. As the start of my Masters program was approaching, I started reflecting on my choice to become a teacher. Will I regret this in 30 years? Shouldn’t I at least TRY to follow my dreams? So, that’s what I did! I decided to drop my Masters program for teaching, and pursue work in fashion and modeling so that in 30 years I can look back on my career and be proud, happy, and without any regrets about what could have been. Now, I can confidently say that I am following a career path that I am 100% in love with!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most excited for my future in modeling – I hope to be signed internationally one day, and inspire other Asian American girls to pursue careers in fashion and modeling. Although I am fairly new to this industry I’ve learned that if you truly love something, you’ll continue to go after it. And if you keep working for it, it will be yours. Being in this industry, I am constantly having to put myself out there with the chance of being rejected. It can be challenging at times to face rejection and wonder if your putting your energy into the right path. But, I know that those experiences have only made me stronger and more determined to reach my goals!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely show them around Los Angeles! I was born and raised in LA, and I absolutely love it here because there’s always something fun to do! I would say that my itinerary would be made up mostly of aesthetically pleasing places for a cute photo opp, lots of delicious food, and the beach! First, we’d grab some brunch and bottomless mimosas at my new favorite food spot in Cara Hotel. The outdoor patio is surrounded by 100 year old olive trees and California palms, and it’s absolutely beautiful! If it was the weekend, we would hit the Rose Bowl Flea Market or Melrose for some thrift shopping. Then, we would drive to Santa Monica to check out the beautiful sunset by the shore and explore the cute amusement park on the pier. We would end the night with the best Mexican street tacos in LA for dinner, and finally get glam to hit up the nightlife scene!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am today without the constant love and support from my friends and family. My sister, Michelle, was the one to encourage me to take that final leap into modeling. I’ve always admired her for pursuing what she loved (acting), despite what others may have thought of it. She is not only a huge support system, but she inspires me to break stereotypes and be an individual who can inspire change and further representation for Asian Americans in this industry.
