We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Senkbeil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what do you attribute your success to?
The biggest factors behind my success in life is that I am very adamant when it comes to integrity and perseverance. I become aware at a young age that if I want something, no one is going to hand it to me, and that I need to work hard. My parents have always been hard workers and I have learned by observation and in my upbringing. My grandparents are Jamaican immigrants that have made it to America and set a foundation for my family to thrive. I put my upmost energy and effort into everything that I do, and I am known for the way I conduct business and for the quality and service that I provide with my work. In regards to HUZE Beauty Lab, my start came during the pandemic when I was unemployed and looking for an industry outside of what I was used to. I started with lashes, because this is a product I use and can genuinely market to others from personal experience. With my research and project management background, I applied my experiences in this new industry and quickly saw results.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Aside from being a 3 time entrepreneur, I am also a second year medical student. Being a business owner and medical student is extremely difficult, and I wouldn’t recommend it. I have two non-profit organizations (Health X Hollywood and the Coalition of Black Men Physicians) along with HUZE Beauty Lab. It is hard being the leader and also fulfilling my school duties and remaining focused in school. Getting into medical school has been a lifelong process and there were many challenges to overcome. I have been working on getting into medical school for a very long time. Now as a student, it is even more difficult to be successful as a student and business owner, but I have always been very involved, and living on a “student loan salary” is extremely difficult as an adult. I actually started my businesses during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as I was unemployed and it was difficult to find companies that were hiring, so I knew I needed to get creative. My non-profit organizations are health based so they aligned with my brand of being a medical student, but getting into the beauty industry was a completely new journey for me. I think it’s important to understand that you don’t have to fit into one category or one lane with your goals, and that trying new things outside of your norm can be just as successful and rewarding. I never imagined myself doing anything outside of healthcare, and it is very refreshing to get involved with the beauty business and allow myself to experience a new range in my creativity while creating the brand and establishing marketing tactics.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When visitors come see me in Los Angeles, I make sure they come to try all my favorite food places, hit a few events, and get to see the beach of course. I would pick them up from the airport and we would grab dinner at Tao in Hollywood or perhaps happy hour at Caffe Roma in Beverly Hills. At night I would take them to some sort of industry party or house party with a view. I also like hitting UNPLUGDLA (a live music show) when I am in town. During the day we would hit the beach or a brunch spot at Venice Beach like High Rooftop Lounge at Hotel Erwin or maybe the Waldorf Astoria rooftop. Depending on how long they stay, we might take a day trip to Tijuana or Vegas just to shake things up. It really depends on the mood I am in and how spontaneous I am feeling.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my family and my friends for their support that made this business possible. My brother, Erik Senkbeil has made it possible to launch my brand and be my feet on the ground in America as I study as a medical student in Barbados. We have relaunched the new brand and filed the business during my school semester breaks. My cousin, Jesennia Dziedzic, has taken over marketing while I have been focused on studying for medical school. My friend Caryn Gordy-Scott has been very supportive of my businesses throughout this journey and is constantly sending me leads to help with marketing and was my first customer. My business consultant, Angele Cade, has been a tremendous help with all my businesses in filing and keeping my companies compliant. I would not have been successful without this group of people.
