We had the good fortune of connecting with Jinyoung Sung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jinyoung, why did you pursue a creative career?
Stages (Spaces), which are made up differently each time with diverse stories, always seemed mysterious to me. It’s because the idea of creating a whole new world is such a powerful notion to think about. Just thinking about actualizing a place in my head with my own unique sense of reality and aesthetics always makes my heart beat. Therefore, I always pursue my creative career as a set designer and try to design more creative and interesting spaces. I enjoy the moment when I make something new and something interesting to people (the audience). When I see people have different emotions through my design and enjoy having new experiences that they have never had before, I feel I’m doing something meaningful and I get more energy from this moment. This energy makes me keep trying to make more creative works.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a set designer, I’m trying to not limit my work in one area. These days, there are many new types of art productions like immersive theater, site-specific performances and VR games. And a set designer could work not only for the traditional theaters or film industry, but also for those new fields by helping them make new creative spaces. When my design boundary becomes wider and wider, I feel my design becomes more creative and colorful, too. As many of these new fields have new techniques and new formats, there are always many new challenges. I think a designer has to learn continuously to be more creative more than other people as we can’t design something without knowing it deeply. So, I’m always studying new techniques, new skills and that’s how I overcome these challenges. And this is how became a designer who can work for diverse fields. I’m also trying to work for art productions from diverse cultures. Every country has different interesting cultural assets. And I enjoy the moments that I have to study about new cultures when I have to work for productions based on them. Many of my film production designs have strong stories based on different countries. And with these experiences, I can do more various designs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I want to show beaches in California. Many people think California has similar beaches, especially they imagine a beach like the Santa Monica beach based on what they saw from magazines or postcards. It’s quite difficult for tourists to know that every beach has different feeling as they usually follow the guide or the information that they search before visiting here. Whenever I go to different beaches, I feel something different. I see their different moods, different color tones and different styles of people’s movements. And I realize every beach has their own attractive view. So, I want to show my friend all these different kinds of beaches and feel their beautiful scenes vividly. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people and art productions that I appreciate. Firstly, I really appreciate my parents and mentors’ supports more than other things. And I also want to talk about ‘Notre-Dame de Paris’, a French musical. It’s very meaningful to me as it made me think that I want to be a set designer. I still remember the moment when I saw its splendid stage and colorful lighting. Even though I was young like 15 or 16 years old, I was really impressed by each interesting asset on stage, which made me feel like I’m in a different world. And I realized I wanted to make something creative and be part of that amazing world. It was the first moment that led me to pursue my career (set designer).
