We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Spearman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Yoga has been my passion for a long time. I always knew I loved it but I never thought I’d start my own yoga business. When I graduated college my first job was teaching yoga at a holistic clinic where I taught yoga to women going though infertility. I absolutely loved working in this field especially right after college, but I still wasn’t happy! I soon realized it was because this was not MY niche. My favorite type of yoga was when I blasted R&B music in my room and flowed the flows that came from within and I wanted to share this with others! This led to me starting R&B Yoga and I soon realized that A LOT of people were open to trying yoga to their favorite R&B and Soul songs! It brought together a community of like minded people in wellness and I felt more fulfillment from my passion than I even dreamed of!
What should our readers know about your business?
R&B Yoga is a pop-up yoga studio that originated in Chicago and is now based in Los Angeles. Classes are taught to R&B, Hip Hop and Rap music. We promote body positivity and welcome ALL levels. Our mantra is to “Just Have Fun” and to not take yoga SO seriously. Yoga is going to look different on everyone and that is the beauty in yoga! Our classes are the most diverse classes you’ll ever witness and everyone feels comfortable and included, which can be rare in the yoga world!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely start our morning out by taking a Rooftop R&B Yoga class in DTLA! They will receive a complimentary edible from CookieJarLa and Vegan juice afterwards! After that I would suggest going to Venice for beach day! We would grab tacos and margaritas from Cabo Cantina and layout in the grass or sand and enjoy the views and vibes!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to The School Yoga Institute where I got certified in yoga at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. I am very appreciative of being able to live off the grid and truly deepen my spiritual journey within my yoga practice. I have truly used all the tools and skills they taught me! I also need to give a shoutout to my mother Julia Spearman! She always supported me following my passion, which isn’t easy sometimes!
